Job description

Description The IT Technician I shall report to the Chief Information Officer/IT Technician II. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Provides customer service to college students, staff, faculty, and local patrons through onsite user assistance, one-on-one or via telephone help desk. Responds to questions from site and telephone customers regarding hardware and/or software issues/problems; troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains campus computers (PC and Macintosh), Smart Classrooms (includes PC tablets, projectors, audio/visual receivers, VCR/DVD combo, Creston control units); VOIP telephone equipment; and all peripherals (printers, copiers, scanners, cell phones, etc.)

Confers with systems, technical, and programming personnel to resolve complex procedural or technical problems; operates supporting peripheral equipment as required and performs routine maintenance on computer hardware equipment; reviews printouts to ensure quality standards are met; performs minor networking troubleshooting from PC to network connectivity, such as servers, switchers, hubs, etc. Assists with identifying and locating reference materials for departmental acquisition; actively educates staff through a variety of media and communications such as website, written guidelines, helpful hints, and shortcuts. Assists with the development and/or recommendations for enhancing existing College computer capabilities and applications, future hardware and software application requirements, and campus-wide software standardization policies.

Maintains familiarity and knowledge of all PC software applications currently being used across campus; performs minor personal computer peripheral hardware repairs; maintains small parts inventories necessary to make common repairs. Documents activities related to help desk inquiries and composes statistical reports summarizing overall activities; safeguards equipment and property following standard computer operations security procedures. May serve on various campus committees as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned or required. Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to any of the various college activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College. Qualifications Associate's degree in Computer Information Systems or related field preferred.

Two (2) years of computer troubleshooting and repair experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess a valid State of New Mexico or Texas driver's license. Additional Qualifications Knowledge of modern computer equipment, programs, and operating systems.

Knowledge of computer science theory, principles, practices and their application to a wide variety of programming and computer operations services. Knowledge of operating principles and practices of data processing equipment and peripherals. Knowledge of computer operating methods, languages and procedures used by the College.

Knowledge of the operational standards and computer security procedures. Knowledge of proper public contact and telephone etiquette. Skill in both verbal and written communication.

Skill in good organization and time management skills. Skill in accurately evaluating and analyzing hardware and software. Skill in determining accurate remedies when troubleshooting computer related problems.

Skill in operating various types of office equipment including computers and related software and hardware. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public. Ability to install and maintain a variety of computer programs.

Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions and implement recommendations in support of goals. Ability to research a variety of information. Ability to tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from customers/users.

Ability to prepare clear and concise reports. Positions may require the ability to safely move up to 50 pounds; and drive a golf cart, truck, and other related equipment. Additional Information In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
