What is computer science?

Computer science is the study of computers, computational systems, and how they process information. It covers a wide range of topics, including programming, algorithms, data structures, artificial intelligence, and software engineering. Computer scientists design and analyze software and hardware to solve problems and improve technology. The field is essential in many industries, from finance and healthcare to entertainment and research.

What Are Computer Science Jobs?

The computer science field provides a wide range of opportunities for technically talented individuals. Depending on your skills and interests, you can find computer science jobs as a software developer, hardware engineer, database administrator, computer systems analyst, network architect, information security analyst, or web developer. You need an analytical mind and strong technical skills to perform your job duties, which may be to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot computer systems, applications, or networks. Your responsibilities in a computer science job are often directly related to the business goals and outcomes of your employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Computer Science role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Computer Science role, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with languages like Python, Java, C++, version control systems such as Git, and software development methodologies is often required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills that set candidates apart. These skills ensure you can design efficient solutions, collaborate on complex projects, and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies.

What are some common challenges computer science professionals face when working on collaborative software projects?

Computer science professionals often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members across different disciplines, managing version control in shared codebases, and ensuring clear communication of technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Navigating conflicting priorities and integrating diverse components can also be demanding, especially in agile environments with tight deadlines. Strong collaboration skills, openness to feedback, and familiarity with team tools like Git and project management platforms can help address these challenges effectively.

Job description

Who we are

Lab37 Robotics is a technology company focused on the development and deployment of robots designed specifically for direct-to-customer food production. Our mission is to revolutionize the food industry by creating innovative robotic solutions that enhance efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of technology to deliver cutting-edge products that meet the evolving needs of our industry.

Job Description

Own the forecasting, analysis, and optimization models that turn Lab37's customer and operational data into reliable decision systems. Translate ambiguous problems into structured models that inform product, operations, and business decisions. Drive models from concept through deployment while balancing accuracy, interpretability, latency, and real-world impact.

What you'll do

Data Analysis & Modeling

  • Perform in-depth data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Develop statistical models and machine learning algorithms to solve business problems.
  • Create and maintain dashboards and reports to visualize key metrics and communicate findings.

Data Pipeline Development & Maintenance

  • Help define Lab37's overarching data infrastructure, standards, and governance policies.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust and scalable data pipelines for various data sources.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, performance, and reliability across all pipelines.

Operations Research and Optimization

  • Model and optimize end-to-end system decision variables across the operational ecosystem.
  • Define objective functions that formalize tradeoffs (cost, quality, timing, customer experience).
  • Build optimization systems that continuously re-plan as inputs and conditions change.
  • Develop simulation tools for "what-if" analysis to guide product and operational decisions.

Cross-functional collaboration

  • Partner with operations, product, and engineering teams to translate data into crisp requirements.
  • Communicate complex concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support business operations with data-driven insights and analysis.

What we are looking for

  • Required Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field; advanced degree a plus.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in data science, machine learning, statistics, operations research, or similar domains.
  • Track record building and deploying models that drive measurable business impact.
  • Strong analytical and statistical rigor; able to diagnose performance, identify root causes, and quantify tradeoffs.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, SQL) with the ability to build production-ready data pipelines and models.
  • Systems-thinking mindset; able to model complex, constraint-driven environments end-to-end.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with operations research or constraint-based optimization (e.g., LP/MIP, scheduling, resource allocation).
  • Experience building simulation models for complex, real-world systems (e.g., discrete-event or digital twins).
  • Experience working with real-time operational or telemetry data in production environments.
  • Experience in food service, on-demand delivery, or just-in-time manufacturing / production systems.

Why join us

  • Demand for online food delivery is growing really fast! In the last 5 years, just in the US, the overall market has expanded 10X from $10B to $100B, and could expand to $500bn- $1T by 2030.
  • Changing the restaurant industry: You'll be part of a team that helps restaurants succeed in online food delivery.
  • Collaborative environment: You will receive support and guidance from experienced colleagues and managers, helping you to learn, grow and achieve your goals, and you'll work closely with other teams to ensure our customer's success.
