Job Description

The Research Engineer II position involves the design and development of custom software tools and advanced data models, algorithms, and analytics solutions that drive business insights, improve decision-making processes, and meet customer requirements of the Texas A&M Center for Applied Technology. Specific technical activities include evaluating project requirements to determine the best solution for a problem, designing, implementing, testing, and debugging tools and algorithms in various programming languages, developing associated software documentation, performing software support and maintenance as needed, and other related duties as assigned. Candidates must be able to work independently as well as collaborate with cross-functional teams. Those who are self-motivated, curious, adaptive, and exercise independent thought and judgment are the primary candidates for this opportunity. Candidates should have a desire to stay abreast of changes in technology as it relates to their work, and must be able to evaluate and identify new technologies to support projects. Candidates should be able to interface with customers to define product requirements and provide technology support as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, support, and document software tools, data models and algorithms written in various programming languages. Perform statistical analysis and predictive modeling to uncover insights and trends. (50%)

  • Design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines and ETL processes. Implement data storage solutions (e.g., data lakes, warehouses) to support large-scale data processing. (20%)

  • Work closely with customers, as well as other software developers and business stakeholders, to understand data requirements and deliver actionable tools and insights. Communicate findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences. (10%)

  • Explore and evaluate new tools, technologies, and methodologies to enhance data science capabilities. Identify and implement best practices for data governance, security, and compliance. (10%)

  • Other duties as assigned. (10%)

What we need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of related experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Science degree in Data Science, Computer Science or Statistics, or an accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science, Computer Science or Statistics with an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

What is helpful:

  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).

  • Experience with database design (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, etc.).

  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Grafana, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java.

  • Strong knowledge of machine learning frameworks and libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, scikit-learn).

  • Proficiency with software development tools (e.g., VS Code, Jira, Jenkins, etc.).

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Competencies:

Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system.
