Job description

Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, is searching for a Director of Data Strategy to lead the development and execution of the company's enterprise data strategy. This visionary will set the course for how data is collected, governed, shared, and used across BHHC for innovation in analytics/AI and improved customer outcomes, partnering with key strategic leaders in Claims, Finance, Analytics, Actuarial, Underwriting, HR, Marketing, and IT to ensure we have a clear roadmap that strengthens data quality, trust, accessibility, and business value.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
  • Build and execute the enterprise data strategy that drives our core business priorities and long-term direction.
  • Translate strategic goals into actionable workstreams that improve data quality, governance, reporting, and insights.
  • Work closely with the CEO, CIO, and Executive team to align data initiatives with business objectives and innovation.
GOVERNANCE AND STANDARDS
  • Establish and chair the Enterprise Data Governance Committee.
  • Develop and implement policies for data roles, stewardship, metadata, lineage, and quality.
  • Define the governance model for data feeds, data extracts, and the use of operational and analytical copies of data.
  • Ensure BHHC meets legal and regulatory expectations for data privacy, usage, security, and retention.
  • In partnership with the Analytics and IT leaders, support establishment of policies and frameworks on data use for modeling and AI.

BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
  • Partner with Claims, Underwriting, Actuarial, Finance, HR, Marketing and Operations to understand data needs and turn them into prioritized roadmaps.
  • Create strong working relationships across all departments and serve as the primary bridge between business teams and technology teams.
  • Work closely with the Chief Data Architect to bring strategic initiatives to life through sound architecture that securely drives business growth.
PROGRAM EXECUTION
  • Build and oversee a multiyear data strategy program including data discovery, catalog, architecture modernization, integration improvements, and data quality.
  • Guide consulting partners that support the data strategy program.
  • Establish the strategy for how the organization manages inbound and outbound data feeds, operational data requests, and analytical/AI data needs.
  • Measure the impact of data initiatives and communicate outcomes to the Executive team.
LEADERSHIP AND CULTURE
  • Promote a culture where data is trusted, shared appropriately, and used responsibly to drive collaborative innovation.
  • Mentor data stewards and program leads across the company.
  • Drive transparency, collaboration, and accountability across all data and analytical/AI efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • EDUCATION:  Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Analytics, or related field, required. Masters/Advanced Degree preferred.
  • CERTIFICATIONS: Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or Certified Information Management Professional (CIMP) a plus.

EXPERIENCE
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in data strategy, analytics, governance, or data management with a growth track record.
  • Strong background working with enterprise source systems, operational data feeds, and customer-facing platforms required.
  • Experience supporting or partnering with teams that use large scale policy, claims, CRM, or workflow systems.
  • Strong understanding of insurance data, regulatory requirements, and complex transactional systems.
  • Proven ability to build cross-functional relationships and influence at the Executive level.
  • Experience leading enterprise data governance programs.

$240,370 - $260,330 a year
