Essential Functions and Other Important Duties
DUTIES
  • Serves as a City of Denton Intern, placed within one of the City's eight focus departments/divisions based on academic major, interest, and departmental need:
    • Public Administration, Political Science, Public Affairs
    • Electrical, Engineering
    • Criminal Justice, Forensics, Emergency Management and Planning, Safety
    • Energy, Electrical Engineering
    • Human & Animal Health: Social Sciences, Recreation, Sports Medicine, Psychology, Veterinary Medicine
    • Finance, Human Resources, Marketing & Communications, Audit
    • Geography, GIS, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems
    • Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning

  • Placement is based on the candidate's ranked preferences submitted during the application process; candidates not selected for their top choice will be considered for one of their next two ranked interests.
  • Contributes to real projects, initiatives, and daily operations within the assigned department, applying academic coursework and skills to hands-on municipal government work.
  • Completes assigned tasks, research, reports, or projects under the guidance of a department mentor/supervisor, meeting deadlines and quality expectations.
  • Attends onboarding, training, and orientation sessions to gain working knowledge of City of Denton operations, values, and professional expectations.
  • Collaborates with department staff, cross-functional teams, and fellow interns across other divisions on assigned projects.
  • May participate in optional career development, networking, or community engagement opportunities as offered throughout the internship.
  • Maintains regular, reliable attendance and communicates proactively with supervisor and HR regarding schedule, workload, or concerns.
  • Represents the City of Denton professionally when engaging with the public, other departments, and community partners.

Other Important Duties
  • Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned by the department supervisor or HR Program Lead.
  • Assists with special projects or initiatives outside of primary department duties as needed.
  • Provides feedback and program evaluation input to help continuously improve the Internship Program for future cohorts.
  • May assist with recruitment or promotional efforts for future internship cycles (e.g., campus events, panels, testimonials, division-specific outreach), helping build the pipeline for future interns and full-time City employees.

Program Overview
The City of Denton Internship is for current college/graduate students. This is an unpaid internship. All documentation required for college credit must be completed by the student, with necessary support from their Mentor.
Job Requirements
  • Current enrollment in a college/university or graduate program, in good academic standing, pursuing a degree relevant to one of the City's eight focus divisions, or a recent graduate in one of these fields seeking a volunteer service placement.
  • Open to students from any accredited college or university.
  • Must complete the application questionnaire, including ranked department preferences (top three choices).
  • Must complete the required background check and onboarding.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work environment varies by department/division: primarily office-based for Public Administration, Finance/HR/Marketing, and GIS/Computer Science placements; may include field, lab, shop, or outdoor conditions for Engineering, Energy, Public Safety, and Animal Health placements.
  • Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as a computer, telephone, and copier; may require use of specialized equipment relevant to the assigned department/division (e.g., field instruments, lab equipment) under supervision.
  • May require occasional local travel between City departments or facilities for department-related activities.
  • Some departments/divisions (e.g., Engineering, Emergency Management, Public Safety, Animal Health) may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, machinery, animals, or field sites as part of assigned duties.
  • Physical demands are consistent with the assigned department/divisions typical duties; reasonable accommodations are available upon request.
