What Are Summer Jobs in Computer Science?

Summer computer science jobs are for students, teachers, or academics who want to work in computer-related positions or undertake internships that provide experience in fields such as IT or software development. In these short term jobs, your duties depend on the needs of your employer. A computer science instructor can work with students of various ages to teach computer skills during summer school or a computer camp. As an intern, you might work on programming, computer engineering, or database administration tasks as part of an internship program. Academic professionals can work on research projects that have a programming component during the summertime.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Computer Science Summer internship?

During a Computer Science Summer internship, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects ranging from software development and debugging to data analysis and algorithm design. Interns often collaborate with experienced engineers, participate in code reviews, and may contribute to ongoing company initiatives or build prototypes for new features. The work environment is typically team-oriented, providing opportunities to learn from peers and mentors while gaining practical experience with real-world systems and tools. This exposure helps interns develop technical skills and gain insight into potential career paths within computer science.

What are Computer Science Summer programs?

Computer Science Summer programs are short-term educational opportunities, usually held during the summer months, that allow students to explore computer science through hands-on projects, coursework, and workshops. These programs are often designed for high school or college students who want to gain practical experience in areas like programming, robotics, artificial intelligence, or cybersecurity. Participants may collaborate on group projects, attend lectures from industry professionals, and build a foundation for future studies or careers in technology. Programs can be found at universities, online, or through specialized organizations, and they often provide networking opportunities and exposure to the latest industry trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Science Summer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Summer Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in programming, data structures, and algorithms, often gained through coursework or a related degree program. Familiarity with languages like Python or Java, version control systems such as Git, and exposure to software development tools is common. Strong problem-solving skills, willingness to learn, and effective teamwork set outstanding interns apart. These abilities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly, and integrate well with professional teams during their short tenure.

Your Role:
Senior Product Manager, Global Web Products
As the Senior Product Manager for Global Web Products, you will own the strategic vision and execution for Elanco's global web platform. You will be responsible for our modern, headless CMS (Kontent.ai) and the React-based components that power our digital experiences worldwide. Your mission is to enhance our web platform's capabilities and provide a holistic strategy for how various marketing and business applications (like education, rebates, and event management) integrate seamlessly.
This is a key technical product leadership role where you will bridge the gap between business needs and engineering execution. You will work closely with global stakeholders to translate their requirements into a clear, prioritized roadmap and partner with the Global Web Leader to establish a new web governance team. By mentoring another product manager and guiding our dedicated development and support teams, you will be at the center of driving Elanco's digital strategy forward.
Your Responsibilities:
  • Own the product strategy and roadmap for Elanco's global web platform, focusing on building new capabilities on our headless CMS (Kontent.ai).
  • Provide a holistic strategic view of how various applications (e.g., education management, rebates, event management) integrate into the core web platform.
  • Translate business needs from global stakeholders (Marketing, B2B, Corporate) into technical requirements for the development team, bridging the gap between business and engineering.
  • Partner with the Global Web Leader to establish and co-host a new governance team for the web portfolio.
  • Mentor another Product Manager and guide the development and support teams within a bi-weekly Scrum release cycle.

What You Need to Succeed (minimum qualifications):
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Computer Science or a related field with an equivalent level of experience.
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of digital product management experience, with a proven track record of managing global, high-priority web products.
  • Top Skills: Proven technical expertise in modern web architecture (headless CMS, React) and the ability to translate business needs into technical requirements; Strong experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and demonstrated ability to manage global stakeholders and product backlogs in a fast-paced environment.

What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications):
  • Direct, hands-on experience implementing or managing enterprise headless content management systems (e.g., Kontent.ai, Contentful, Strapi).
  • Experience with modern web analytics (e.g., heat mapping, user journey analysis) and AI-based or generative AI for SEO.
  • Familiarity with integrating web platforms with backend services such as Customer Data Platforms (CDPs), CRM (e.g., Salesforce), and identity providers.
  • Previous experience mentoring other product managers.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical executive stakeholders.

Additional Information:
  • Travel: 10-15%
  • Location: Global Elanco Headquarters - Indianapolis, IN - Hybrid Work Environment
