Job description

Element has an opportunity for a Laboratory Assistant to join our rapidly expanding team in Edmonton for a seasonal assignment until December 31st 2026). As a member of the operations team in one of the various laboratories across Element, the Laboratory Assistant position performs a variety of routine and non-routine testing assignments within the department assigned and insures timely and accurate test results under direct supervision.  The technician positions must be proficient in a number of core business skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures.


  • Receive samples and document receipt
  • Inspect samples and sample information sheet, documenting sample integrity. Notify Team Leaders of any potential problems with samples, analysis or client requests.
  • Communicate with client regarding sample integrity and analysis requests and document all communications
  • Enter sample and client information into LIMS, assigning analysis requirements and generating sample labels, Notice of Sample Receipt and Lot Communication Sheets
  • Distribute samples to the correct sample storage location
  • Determine internal/external sublet location and prepare sample for shipping
  • Complete daily checks of sample storage equipment
  • Receive payment from clients
  • Request supplies and consumables in advance of requirement by recording needed items in order book
  • Follow the Quality System as documented in the Quality Manual
  • General duties as directed by the team leader or operations manager
  • Strict adherence to the corporate Quality System
  • Read, understand and follow all relevant Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and notify coworkers of potential sample hazards; comply with all rules and responsibilities as outlined under the corporate Health and Safety Policy

  • Post-secondary education in chemistry or other science related field or high school diploma with related experience
    • On The Job Training Required:
    o Quality System Training
    o WHMIS/Safety Training
    o LIMS Operation Training
    o LMS - Sample Reception Procedures
  • Understanding and ability to implement sample receiving procedures; understanding and utilizing field terminology
  • Effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of service codes and chemical preservative
  • Proficient in LIMS applications
  • Organization skills
  • Knowledge of correct sample storage conditions
  • Knowledge of what analysis location cannot perform and where to sublet sample
  • Knowledge of storage equipment temperature range
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices
  • Knowledge of service fees and provide receipt
  • Knowledge of supply levels and ordering process
  • Technical knowledge of test methods
  • Knowledge of the Quality System with the ability to interpret and implement Quality Manual

Physical Demands:

  • Frequency of required physical force: Minimum (moderate).
  • Lifting requirements: lifting <50 lbs. often and > 50 lbs. on occasion
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift 50+lbs periodically
