Job description

The University of Virginia School of Nursing is seeking a scholar with a developing program of research as a Postdoctoral Fellow with a focus in Cardiovascular Nursing Research. The appointment is for one year, with potential renewal for a second-year contingent upon successful performance. This is a unique opportunity to establish and accelerate your program of research at a world-class research institution.
The postdoctoral fellow will be paired with a faculty mentoring team of federally funded nurse scientists. The mentoring team will guide the fellow to develop and execute an individualized training plan to support their professional development and research goals to become an independent nurse scientist in cardiovascular research.
Candidates must possess at least one degree in nursing and a research doctorate from a research-intensive program, demonstrate a beginning track record of scholarly dissemination (i.e., publication, grant submission) in a cardiovascular conditions or related field. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the position is anticipated to begin August 2026.
For nurse candidates, eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia is preferred. Selected applicants will be required to complete a background check and health screen prior to employment per university policy.
Fellows will receive a $67,000 annual salary and healthcare benefits, $10,000 in discretionary research funds, a dedicated workspace, access to a computer, and a dedicated mentorship team.
This position is not available for sponsorship.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct and analyze research related to cardiovascular health, nursing interventions, and patient outcomes.
  • Design and implement studies, including protocol development, data collection, and statistical analysis.
  • Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Assist in grant writing and contribute to securing external funding for research initiatives.
  • Mentor graduate students and participate in collaborative research activities within the department.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional and federal research regulations.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Nursing or a related health science discipline (e.g., Public Health, Epidemiology, Biomedical Sciences).
  • Demonstrated research experience in cardiovascular health or related areas.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
