Description Position Peer Mentor Coordinator Position Number: 0078834T Hiring Unit: VP Academic Strategy, Hawaii P-20 Partnerships Location: Manoa Campus Date Posted July 21, 2026 Closing Date: August 04, 2026, 11:59PM HST Band: B Salary : salary schedules and placement information Additional Salary Information: Minimum $5,640/month Full Time/Part Time: Full Time Temporary/Permanent: Temporary - NTE 09/30/2026 Funding: Federal Other Conditions: Renewal dependent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Duties and Responsibilities: * Implements a peer mentoring program to connect and communicate with GEAR UP middle school and high school students to provide guidance and support in their college going journey. * Develops and delivers curriculum and interactive activities on college affordability, importance of college education and goal setting for middle and high school students.
* Implements a peer mentoring program to connect and communicate with GEAR UP college students to provide guidance and support through their first year in college. * Researches and refers GEAR UP college students to their UH campus student support services. * Develops and delivers curriculum on time management, financial literacy and goal setting for first year college students.
* Develops job descriptions, recruits, trains and supervises college peer mentors to provide mentoring support to GEAR UP middle school and high school students, and GEAR UP college students. * Develops partnerships with GEAR UP site coordinators and GEAR UP middle and high school staff to implement events and activities to support GEAR UP middle school and high school students. * Maintains a database of GEAR UP students and tracks their academic progress and participation in GEAR UP activities.
* Maintains a database of GEAR UP college mentors. Assists in college enrollment and application events at GEAR UP schools (i.e., FAFSA workshops, Scholarship Aha, Application Events). Performs as a team leader for periodic large-scale events, convening planning committees, engaging and managing vendors, coordinating logistics, and recruiting and supervising volunteers
Other duties as assigned *Denotes Essential Functions Minimum Qualifications: Possession of baccalaureate degree in Education, Counseling, Public Administration, Social Work, or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for counseling or student support; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of counseling or student support as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with counseling or student support.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Experience working with populations of varied backgrounds in postsecondary education.
Experience supervising peer mentors. Experience developing and managing project budgets. Experience developing multi-agency partnerships.
Familiarity with first year college support services. Working knowledge of populations representing non-traditional or first-generation college students, and/or students of varied backgrounds, perspectives, or approaches to communications. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. Desirable Qualifications: Experience working with the University of Hawaii, the State of Hawaii Department of Education and / or college access programs in Hawaii. Knowledge of undergraduate program requirements and financial aid processes.
Knowledge of the childhood development from middle school through high school. Familiarity with GEAR UP program and Hawaii P-20. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
