Job description

Job Summary
As student enrolled in an accredited Radiology Program, the Radiology Tech Extern will assist members of the Imaging team in providing imaging services to patients. The Extern will work under the direct supervision of a Manager, Supervisor or qualified staff member at all times.
Core Job Responsibilities
Orientation
  • Learn and follow department specific policies and procedures.
  • Learns and applies licensing requirements specific to radiation producing devices.
  • Understand, acknowledge and abide by HIPAA law.

Departmental Operations
  • Review EMR to ensure imaging order prior to patient arrival.
  • Using established patient identifiers, greet patient upon arrival to department and transport them to imaging room as directed by lead tech.
  • Act as patient liaison to address delays and concerns. Circulate through department.
  • Place reminder calls to patients for upcoming imaging appointments.
  • Assist imaging techs with moving and transporting patients.
  • Respond to patient safety and comfort needs or requests for information.
  • Assist with room and equipment preparation before or after imaging studies. Ensure rooms have adequate stock and a safe and clean environment.
  • Assist in preparing patient for examination or procedure under supervision.
  • Assist with operating radiology equipment safely and correctly.
  • Become familiar with supplies and equipment used for procedures. Assess par-levels of supplies to ensure products are available for biopsies, drainages, etc.
  • Transport specimens to laboratory as needed.
  • Learn all aspects of radiation safety and apply techniques in department.
  • Attend radiation safety meetings with a goal of learning processes and expectations from providers, physicists and management.
  • Recognizes and responds to emergency situations.
  • Follows ALARA principles.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements
REQUIRED:
  • Enrollment in an accredited Radiology Program.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Concentration needed to assimilate information from many different sources.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
