Job description

Department: Utilities Administration Reports To: Assistant Director of Utilities

Summary: The Summer Intern position offers students and early-career professionals the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in municipal government. Interns will assist with assigned projects, support daily operations, and develop professional skills while working under the guidance of City staff.

The Summer Intern assigned to the Utilities Administration department will support daily operations and assist with departmental projects, gaining practical experience in mapping and data management by helping create and maintain GIS maps, develop line features, and incorporate new construction as-built information into the City's GIS database.

Essential Functions: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create and update GIS features, including linework and map layers, to support accurate and current geospatial data.
  • Assist with integrating as-built construction information into the GIS database, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and proper documentation.
  • Support daily operational tasks and administrative functions
  • Conduct basic research, data entry, or reporting as needed
  • Provide customer service or internal support, as applicable
  • Attend meetings, trainings, or site visits as assigned
  • Follow all City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines: Must be currently enrolled in or recently completed coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required.
