What is a Computer Science Intern job?

A Computer Science Intern is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, or other computing fields. This role helps build technical skills, industry knowledge, and networking opportunities, preparing interns for full-time positions in the tech industry.

What kind of projects and tasks can I expect as a Computer Science Intern?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as writing and testing code, debugging software, supporting ongoing development projects, and collaborating on team-based assignments. Interns often contribute to designing features, fixing bugs, conducting research, or assisting in quality assurance under the guidance of senior engineers or mentors. The exact nature of your projects may vary based on the company and team, but you will typically gain hands-on experience with real-world software development tools and workflows. This exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand agile work environments and best practices, making it a valuable step toward a full-time role in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer Science Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), data structures, algorithms, and basic software development principles, typically backed by ongoing coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes exposure to cloud platforms or coding certifications can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, initiative, and the ability to work well within a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that interns can quickly contribute to projects, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate effectively with experienced professionals.

About the Role

As an Information Technology Intern, you'll work closely with our IT team to support day-to-day technology operations, employee support, and basic IT projects in our New York office. This internship is a great opportunity for a college student candidate to gain hands-on experience in a modern corporate IT environment. This candidate needs to be local to New York City, as this role is a onsite position.
Our environment is primarily macOS and some Windows devices, and we use tools such as Google Workspace, JumpCloud, Zoom, Slack, Jira, and other SaaS platforms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide basic Tier 1 support for employee workstations, printers, Wi-Fi, account access, Zoom, Slack, and Google Workspace questions
  • Triage help desk tickets, gather relevant details, document troubleshooting steps, and escalate issues appropriately
  • Assist with employee setups, monitor/dock/peripheral configuration, conference room checks, and general office IT readiness
  • Manage information technology assets by updating inventory records for laptops, monitors, and related equipment
  • Assist with onboarding and offboarding preparation, including staging equipment, preparing desks, collecting returned hardware, and updating checklists under supervision
  • Support IT operations such as hardware audits, equipment organization, software rollout tracking, and process cleanup
Who You Are
  • College student, ideally pursuing a degree in IT, computer science, or a related field
  • Basic familiarity with macOS and Windows
  • Strong communication skills and a helpful, professional attitude
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, document work, and follow established procedures
  • Ability to work onsite in the NYC office 15-20 hours per week
  • Basic understanding of networking, MFA, SaaS applications, computer hardware, or endpoint management is a plus
  • Prior customer service, helpdesk, campus IT, retail tech, or troubleshooting experience is a plus
