What is a Computer Science Intern job?

A Computer Science Intern is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, or other computing fields. Interns typically assist with coding, debugging, research, and testing while working under the guidance of experienced professionals. This role helps build technical skills, industry knowledge, and networking opportunities, preparing interns for full-time positions in the tech industry.

What kind of projects and tasks can I expect as a Computer Science Intern?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as writing and testing code, debugging software, supporting ongoing development projects, and collaborating on team-based assignments. Interns often contribute to designing features, fixing bugs, conducting research, or assisting in quality assurance under the guidance of senior engineers or mentors. The exact nature of your projects may vary based on the company and team, but you will typically gain hands-on experience with real-world software development tools and workflows. This exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand agile work environments and best practices, making it a valuable step toward a full-time role in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer Science Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), data structures, algorithms, and basic software development principles, typically backed by ongoing coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes exposure to cloud platforms or coding certifications can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, initiative, and the ability to work well within a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that interns can quickly contribute to projects, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate effectively with experienced professionals.

Who We Are. Chevron is one of the world's leading energy companies-but what really sets us apart is how we're rethinking energy for the future. From producing oil and gas to developing lowercarbon technologies, Chevron engineers work across the full energy system to power everyday life more safely, efficiently, and responsibly. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Chevron operates around the globe and across the entire energy value chain. Learn more on our website Chevron.com.

What You'll Actually Do

Chevron is hiring Earth Science Intern roles at various operating locations across the U.S, including:

  • Houston, TX

Earth Scientists within Chevron are part of multi-disciplinary teams which vary in make-up but can include geologists, geophysicists, engineers, data scientists, and/or software developers. Earth Scientists develop technical skills in geoscience, geophysics, and petrophysics assignments focused on exploration, development, reservoir characterization, and well operations.

Earth Science interns are assigned to positions and projects that contribute value to Chevron based on degree, relevant academic preparation, previous work experience, and career objectives. Interns will be provided guidance by a supervisor and a technical mentor.

We encourage the following candidates to apply:

Geologists with specialties such as basin modeling, basin analysis, stratigraphy, structural geology, geochemistry, seal analysis, reservoir quality prediction, reservoir modeling, geostatistics, geomechanics, and fluid flow.

Geophysicists with specialties such as seismic acquisition, seismic imaging and processing, cloud computing, quantitative geophysical interpretation and attribute analysis, velocity modeling, geophysical surveillance, geophysical inversion, and potential fields.

What's Next After the Internship

Topperforming interns may be invited back-or offered a fulltime role after graduation.

New grads who join Chevron fulltime enter the Horizons Program, a structured earlycareer experience that includes:

  • Formal training + onthejob learning
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals
  • Multiple job assignments and possible location rotations

You can build a career as a technical expert, people leader, or both.

What You Must Have

The following qualifications are required:

  • Students currently enrolled in a Master's or Doctorate Thesis program or with less than 2 years post-graduate degree experience in geology, geophysics, geological engineering, or related fields.
  • Professional/academic focus in a technical area aligned with Chevron's business needs.
  • Strong academic performance in core programs, communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Position may require driving on a routine basis.
  • Ability to demonstrate The Chevron Way.

What Sets You Apart

The following are preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience with industry workflows for subsurface characterization.
  • Participation in an energy industry or sponsored university research project.
  • Practical experience with geoscience coding, data science, and/or machine learning.

Why Intern at Chevron?

  • You work on real projects, not side tasks
  • You use modern tools and cloud platforms
  • You learn how software scales in a global enterprise
  • You build skills that translate anywhere
  • You're supported by experienced engineers and mentors

Compensation & Benefits

The anticipated range for this position is $35.20/hour - $10,200/monthly. The selected candidate's monthly or hourly compensation will be determined based on their selected role, degree level and academic year.

As an intern, you will receive the following benefits:

  • Furnished housing.
  • Participation in Employee Savings Investment Plan with immediate vesting in both employee and company contributions.
    • Chevron matching contributions:
      • 4% company match for a 1% employee contribution.
      • 8% company match for a 2% employee contribution.
  • Work schedules:
    • Flexible work schedules (5/40, 9/80, or 4/10), as determined by the work group and confirmed with the hiring manager.
  • Paid holidays depending on your work schedule.
  • Full year of service credit for each internship completion (must be re-employed within 365 days)

If later converted to a fulltime new graduate position, Chevron offers competitive pay and benefits to eligible employees, including healthcare, time off, retirement plans, and development opportunities. Learn more at http://hr2.chevron.com/
