What is a Computer Science Intern job?

A Computer Science Intern is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, or other computing fields. Interns typically assist with coding, debugging, research, and testing while working under the guidance of experienced professionals. This role helps build technical skills, industry knowledge, and networking opportunities, preparing interns for full-time positions in the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer Science Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), data structures, algorithms, and basic software development principles, typically backed by ongoing coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes exposure to cloud platforms or coding certifications can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, initiative, and the ability to work well within a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that interns can quickly contribute to projects, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate effectively with experienced professionals.

What kind of projects and tasks can I expect as a Computer Science Intern?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as writing and testing code, debugging software, supporting ongoing development projects, and collaborating on team-based assignments. Interns often contribute to designing features, fixing bugs, conducting research, or assisting in quality assurance under the guidance of senior engineers or mentors. The exact nature of your projects may vary based on the company and team, but you will typically gain hands-on experience with real-world software development tools and workflows. This exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand agile work environments and best practices, making it a valuable step toward a full-time role in the field.

Job description

The Production Support Engineer Intern will join our Hardware Engineering team in Indianapolis, IN.
Typical Duties
The Production Support Engineer Intern will support the hardware engineering department with development of repair and production processes through development of technical work instructions and detailed process guidance, primarily from an electrical perspective. The Engineer will assist in process development while supporting upstream design and downstream activities such as hands-on electrical and RF testing and troubleshooting, electrical assembly and board processing using Surface Mount Technology (SMT) methods, fixturing design, supplier reviews and parts obsolescence resolution, addressing quality issues and other activities based upon the needs of programs. Additionally, this position may advise design engineers on Design for Manufacturing (DFM), provide inputs on scaling manufacturing techniques, and other production-related matters. The environment will be a combination of office, manufacturing floor and test laboratory work.
An example of tasking would be to develop or revise process work instructions and routings to ensure repair personnel have the training, tools, techniques, and steps to test, troubleshoot and repair complex electrical and electromechanical assemblies. The Intern will work with engineers and production personnel to understand the problems, address obstacles encountered during assembly and integration, develop solutions and provide recommendations, and appropriately communicate to personnel who would be performing the operations. Continued support of the process would allow for follow-up to capture issues and make iterative improvements to the processes and work instructions, and document lessons learned.
Required Skills:
  • Ability to understand and creatively solve complex problems
  • Basic MS Office skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Experience in technical writing and development of detailed work instructions for assembly and rework operations
  • Familiarity with electrical and electromechanical systems
  • Ability to read prints and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to design/develop Tooling, Fixturing, Jigs, and circuit designs for assembly or testing operations
  • Strong scientific aptitude and math skills (linear algebra, trigonometry)
  • Must be a US Citizen with ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

Desired Experience & Skills:
  • Knowledge of configuration management processes
  • Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) suites (Windchill preferred) to manage production process documents

  • Familiarity with National Industry Standards such as ASME, ASTM, SAE standards, and MIL-STDs in regards to fabrication, assembly, and testing procedures and requirements (Ability to Reference, Interpret, and integrate into detailed work instructions)
  • Experience using 3D CAD programs to create drawings from models

  • Experience reading and interpreting assembly drawings.
  • Knowledge of circuit card design and manufacture

  • Familiarity with ASME Y14-series standards (including Y14.5 GD&T)

Education Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Engineering or related Science program (preferred concentrations in Electrical Engineering/Technology, Aerospace, Systems, Manufacturing Engineering or related field)
