Job description

Library Science Intern
The Friends Select School Libraries seek candidates for the position of Library Science Intern to work a range of 20-24 hours per week. The ideal candidate would be someone who has a passion for and experience in library science and is looking for an internship or professional work to supplement degree work. Anticipated start date is the beginning of the 2026-27 school year. The schedule is generally Monday-Friday from 12:30-4:30pm, with the possibility of additional hours based on coverage needs for other library staff. This position reports to the Director of Libraries.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Support with circulation, shelving, weeding and processing of books
  • Collaborate with librarians to assist with classes
  • Respond to student and faculty needs, such as help with printing, readers advisory, etc
  • Support the library team with long term library projects, including inventory, updating the library website, social media
  • Create book displays and library promotion
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in a Master’s Degree, ALA-accredited Library and Information Studies or related. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with strong customer service orientation and commitment to inclusiveness of diverse ideas and perspectives, and comfortable working with a wide range of youth populations
  • Evidence of self-motivation to address new challenges, ability to solve problems with minimal supervision and commitment to learn new knowledge and skills
  • Knowledge of children's, middle grade and young adult literature
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive and welcoming work environment in both physical and digital spaces
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Google Workspace, as well as customized computer software and online computer systems
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously, while ensuring successful completion.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions accurately
  • Ability to quickly and accurately check in and shelve books in either numerical or alphabetical order, with a goal of about 200 books per shift
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to thoughtfully incorporate professional feedback into future tasks
  • Commitment to Quaker values, social justice and anti-racism

Pay range is $22-$26/hour, depending on experience.
