How much do computer science certificate jobs pay per year?
What types of career opportunities can I pursue after obtaining a computer science certificate?
Completing a Computer Science Certificate opens doors to a wide range of entry-level roles such as software developer, IT support specialist, web developer, and data analyst. Many certificate holders find opportunities in fast-paced tech environments, working alongside experienced engineers and participating in real-world projects. With additional experience and ongoing learning, you can advance to more specialized roles or pursue further studies for continued career growth. This certificate provides a strong foundation to build a versatile and rewarding career in technology.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the computer science certificate position, and why are they important?
To thrive in a role that typically requires a Computer Science Certificate, you should possess a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and problem-solving, often backed by a certificate from a recognized program. Familiarity with languages like Python, Java, or C++, as well as experience with software development tools and version control systems such as Git, are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help individuals excel in collaborative projects and technical tasks. These competencies provide a crucial foundation for contributing to technology-driven teams and adapting to the evolving demands of the industry.
What is a computer science certificate?
A Computer Science Certificate job refers to a role that can be obtained with a certificate in computer science rather than a full degree. These jobs often include positions like IT support specialist, web developer, or data analyst. Certificates can help individuals gain foundational skills in programming, cybersecurity, or networking, making them eligible for entry-level roles. Many employers recognize certificates as proof of specialized expertise, especially when combined with practical experience.

The Opportunity:
CACI is seeking an experienced Computer Systems Engineer with strong expertise in Linux system administration, network configuration, cybersecurity compliance, and infrastructure implementation to join our Computer Systems Engineering team supporting NASA's human-rated spacecraft systems in support of our Nation's space exploration initiative at NASA / Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX. Candidates should have experience managing and securing computing environments, including configuring Linux servers (Red Hat and/or Ubuntu), firewalls, VPNs, network switching equipment, and, most of all, possess a great passion to contribute to our Nation's exploration of space.
The candidate will join a team that provides a range of computer systems support to NASA at the Johnson Space Center including user support, security management, network design and operation, account management and provisioning, operation of IT infrastructure services, computing equipment setup, and subject matter expertise for NASA projects.
In addition to outstanding technical expertise, the individual must be adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to clearly communicate technical concepts with customers and engineering stakeholders. The individual must share our passion for our Nation's Space Program and share in the excitement of developing the next human-rated space vehicles.
Responsibilities:
- Independently design, implement, configure, secure, and maintain the full infrastructure stack supporting systems, including firewall, VPN, network switch, DNS, DHCP, and Linux end client configurations.
- Support the full lifecycle of end-user and server systems, including procurement, operating system installation, security hardening, application deployment, and asset tracking.
- Provide hands-on end-user support as needed, including troubleshooting, system fixes, and configuration updates to meet mission and project needs.
- Coordinate with NASA service provider organizations to integrate and utilize enterprise services, including identity management, security services, and networking.
- Configure and manage network infrastructure, including firewalls, VPNs, switches (Cisco or comparable), hardware testbeds, development labs, and isolated environments supporting spacecraft and simulation development.
- Perform cybersecurity posture assessments, implement remediations, and ensure compliance with selected controls from NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5.
- Develop, update, and maintain required cybersecurity documentation, including system security plans, network diagrams, interconnection agreements, disaster recovery plans, risk assessments, and incident documentation.
- Design and implement system baselines and configurations that support mission-critical development while meeting NASA security and operational requirements.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or related disciplines required.
- US Citizenship is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in Linux system administration (RHEL and/or Ubuntu), networking, and cybersecurity tasks in a customer-oriented, fast-paced technical environment. Greater experience is valued.
- Strong working knowledge of computer systems architecture including operating systems, networking, storage, firewalls, VPNs, and cybersecurity concepts. Ability to document system configurations, processes, and architecture clearly and accurately.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with technical teams, NASA stakeholders, and service provider organizations. Ability to work independently, manage multiple technical tasks, and adapt to changing requirements in a dynamic environment.
- Proficiency with standard technical tools and workflows, and familiarity with ticketing, tracking, or project coordination tools (e.g. Jira, ServiceNow, or similar).
Desired:
- Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Cyber Security, or Graduate level coursework or research involving information systems or cyber security.
- Experience with NASA, DoD, or federal government security compliance frameworks, including FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, and related cybersecurity documentation and assessment processes.
- Project management skills or Project Management Professional certification. Relevant IT certifications such as ITIL, Cisco, Red Hat, VMware, ISC2, or SANS. Scripting or software automation skills using Bash, PowerShell, Python, or similar languages; familiarity with Git version control.
- Experience writing technical documentation and maintaining knowledge bases or configuration repositories.
- Experience working with software development teams and/or administering software development tools such as GitLab, GitHub, Jenkins, Jira, and Docker/Podman.
- Experience with any of the following is a plus: Service Now, Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Group Policy, Puppet, Ansible, PowerShell, Tenable SecurityCenter, HCL BigFix, Splunk, GitLab Continuous Integration, Jenkins, Apache web server, Nginx, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL.
