What is a computer repair technician?

A computer repair technician is a professional who diagnoses, troubleshoots, and repairs hardware and software issues in computers. They may work with desktops, laptops, and sometimes mobile devices, addressing problems such as malfunctioning components, viruses, and software errors. Technicians may also perform routine maintenance, install new hardware or software, and provide technical support to users. Their work is essential for ensuring that computers run efficiently and securely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer repair technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Repair Technician, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting, and often a relevant certification like CompTIA A+ or similar. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, repair software, and hardware replacement procedures is typically required. Strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and patience help technicians communicate effectively and resolve issues efficiently. These skills and qualities are vital for accurately diagnosing problems, providing reliable solutions, and ensuring customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by computer repair technicians when diagnosing hardware issues?

Computer repair technicians often encounter challenges such as distinguishing between hardware and software problems, especially when symptoms overlap. Diagnosing intermittent hardware failures, like faulty RAM or failing hard drives, can also be tricky as these issues may not appear consistently. Additionally, working with a wide variety of makes and models requires technicians to stay current with new technology and troubleshooting techniques. Clear communication with clients to explain technical issues and manage expectations is another important aspect of the role.

Job description

FUTURE OPPORTUNITY

Computer Warriors accepts applications throughout the year so we can connect with strong technician candidates before our next opening becomes available.

We may not be actively filling this position today. Applying allows our team to consider you when a Wilmington technician opportunity becomes available that matches your experience, availability, and career goals.

BUILD A CAREER IN TECHNOLOGY

If you enjoy solving problems, working with your hands, and learning how technology works, this role may be a great fit.

Computer Warriors operates electronic repair centers in Wilmington and Jacksonville. We help customers solve frustrating technology problems through repairs, practical solutions, and clear education.

As an In-Store Repair Technician, you will diagnose and repair computers, phones, tablets, and game consoles while helping customers understand their options. You do not need to know how to repair every device before joining us. We are looking for someone with strong problem-solving habits, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to keep learning.

ABOUT THE POSITION

This is a hands-on technical role focused on diagnosing, repairing, testing, and preparing customer devices.

Most days involve working on computers, phones, tablets, and game consoles while documenting your findings, following established repair processes, and documenting your findings clearly and providing accurate recommendations for customers.

We are looking for someone who approaches problems carefully, stays patient when a diagnosis is not obvious, and is willing to ask questions rather than guess. You should be comfortable balancing technical work with occasional customer conversations, phone calls, and support for the front counter during busy periods.

SCHEDULE

This is a full-time position averaging 40 hours per week. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with occasional rotational Saturday shifts from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

The typical Saturday rotation is two Saturdays on followed by four Saturdays off. When you work a Saturday, you will receive a half-day off during the week.

COMPENSATION

Base pay is $14 to $18 per hour, based on experience, plus performance bonuses.

Technicians who consistently meet performance goals typically earn an additional $3 to $4 per hour, bringing typical total earnings to approximately $17 to $22 per hour.

The performance plan does not have a fixed earnings ceiling, so top-performing technicians may earn significantly more.

BENEFITS

Eligible full-time team members receive:

  • 100% employer-paid dental insurance
  • 100% employer-paid vision insurance
  • Medical insurance with Computer Warriors covering 50% of the premium
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Nine paid holidays annually
  • Ten vacation days per year, increasing to fifteen days after three years
  • Employee discounts
  • Company-sponsored training and certifications
  • Opportunities for advancement

Benefits are subject to eligibility requirements and company plan terms.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

You will begin by learning our diagnostic process, repair standards, documentation requirements, and quality-control procedures across computers, phones, tablets, and game consoles.

During your first year, you may have opportunities to complete company-sponsored certifications such as CompTIA IT Fundamentals, CompTIA A+, and other role-relevant training.

With strong performance, continued training, and hands-on experience, future opportunities may include advancing into an Advanced Repair Technician, Onsite Support Technician, team leadership, or other technical roles within Computer Warriors.

Longer-term opportunities may also include moving into more advanced business IT and managed-services work through CW IT Support, depending on your skills, certifications, performance, business needs, and available openings.

WHO THRIVES HERE

You will likely do well in this position if you:

  • Enjoy troubleshooting and figuring out how things work
  • Stay patient when the cause of a problem is not immediately obvious
  • Pay close attention to details and follow documented processes
  • Are comfortable asking questions instead of guessing
  • Accept coaching and use feedback to improve
  • Can explain technical information in a clear, simple way
  • Remain productive without constant supervision
  • Want to build a long-term career in technology

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Diagnosing hardware and software issues across computers, phones, tablets, and game consoles
  • Performing approved repairs according to company procedures and quality standards
  • Installing, updating, and configuring operating systems, software, and applications
  • Testing devices before and after service to verify functionality and repair quality
  • Documenting diagnostic findings, completed work, recommendations, and customer approvals accurately
  • Recommending practical repair, upgrade, protection, or replacement options based on the customer’s needs
  • Protecting customer information and following all data-security and privacy procedures
  • Assisting with customer calls, walk-ins, check-ins, and pickups during busy periods
  • Helping maintain organized parts, tools, supplies, and repair workspaces
  • Continuing to develop technical knowledge through training, research, and certifications

    REQUIREMENTS

    • High school diploma or GED
    • At least one year of customer service, retail, technical support, or related experience
    • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
    • Comfortable learning to work with computers, phones, tablets, game consoles, and small electronic components
    • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow documented repair and testing procedures
    • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to customers and coworkers
    • Willingness to ask questions, accept coaching, and continue learning
    • Ability to remain organized and productive without constant supervision
    • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to our Wilmington location
    • Availability to work the required schedule, including rotational Saturdays
    • Ability to protect confidential customer and company information

Previous professional repair experience and technical certifications are helpful but not required.

    APPLY FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION

Applying does not guarantee an immediate interview or future employment. It allows our team to consider you when a suitable Jacksonville opportunity becomes available.

We value your time and will clearly communicate whether we are actively hiring or retaining your application for future consideration.
