How much do computer programming tutor jobs pay per year?
What is the difference between Computer Programming Tutor vs Computer Science Instructor?
| Aspect | Computer Programming Tutor | Computer Science Instructor |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires programming knowledge, certifications like CompTIA or coding bootcamp experience | Requires a degree in computer science or related field, teaching certifications often preferred |
| Work Environment | One-on-one or small group tutoring, often freelance or private settings | Classroom or online courses at educational institutions or training centers |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Private clients, tutoring companies, online platforms | Schools, colleges, universities, training organizations |
| Search & Comparison Intent | People seeking personalized programming help or tutoring services | Individuals looking for formal computer science education or courses |
The main difference is that a Computer Programming Tutor offers personalized, one-on-one programming assistance, often without formal teaching credentials, while a Computer Science Instructor typically teaches structured courses in educational institutions with formal qualifications. Both roles involve teaching programming but differ in setting, credentials, and scope.

Job description
Hello Duquesne Computer Science Majors!
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science seeks to hire Computer Science tutors for the Fall26/Spring27 academic year at minimum. Computer Science tutors provide support to undergraduate students in introductory, intermediate, and some advanced computer science courses. In addition, you will have the opportunity to tutor some mathematics and statistics courses that you are comfortable with and proficient in.
Note: If you are really interested in being a computer science tutor but you don't fully meet all of the qualifications listed below, please email tutor supervisor, Alex Lipecky, at lipeckya@duq.edu to discuss further.
You are a potential candidate for the CS tutoring position if you are an undergraduate student at Duquesne and:
1) You have completed both COSC 160 - Computer Programming and COSC 215 - Data Structures in Java with a letter grade of B+ or higher.
2) You have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher across all your Computer Science courses.
3) You can commit to being a tutor for the Fall26/Spring27 academic year at minimum.
4) Upon request, you can provide a reference/referral from Duquesne Computer Science faculty members who taught you in at least one course.
5) You are confident in your understanding of concepts in low and mid-level Computer Science courses, and you are confident that you can explain those concepts to tutees.
Although not requirements, attributes such as punctuality, patience, confidence, work ethic, enthusiasm, and creativity are valued. Students who are work-study eligible through the Federal Work-Study program may receive some preference, but we also hire tutors who are not work-study eligible.
Hourly Rate: $12 per hour
Maximum Tutoring Hours per Week: 15 hours
You are paid regardless of whether or not a student signs up and receives tutoring during your scheduled tutoring hours.
We prefer tutors to provide a minimum of 12 hours per week.
You will provide tutoring on the 4th floor of College Hall in the 439 Computer Lab.
Tutoring hours are broken up into 30 minute segments. It's common for a tutee to seek either a 30 minute or 60 minute tutoring session.
You may offer tutoring on M-T-W-TH-F with your earliest start slot 9:00-9:30 am and latest start slot 4:30 pm-5:00 pm.
You may offer in-person tutoring only or in-person + online tutoring. If you offer in-person + online tutoring, the tutee will choose their preference. You must still be physically located on the 4th floor of College Hall when conducting online tutoring. Most tutees prefer in-person tutoring.
Being a Computer Science tutor is a great opportunity. Tutors will work in a friendly and collaborative work environment with flexible hours and flexible course coverage. We hire students who we consider to be some of our best students within the major. It looks great on a resume and will broaden your network of students and faculty. You will also find that you will improve your own CS knowledge and CS skill set by helping other students learn.
If you meet the qualifications and are interested in the position, apply and email tutor supervisor, Alex Lipecky: lipeckya@duq.edu
Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully,
Alex Lipecky
