Job description

RK&K is hiring a Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Traffic team in Baltimore, MD for the Summer 2027 season. As an intern in our Traffic Department at RK&K, you will receive on-the-job training working alongside and collaborating closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of traffic engineers and transportation professionals in the industry.

This internship is forCivil EngineeringStudents in the Transportation discipline. In this role, interns will gain insight into various aspects of traffic engineering includingdesign, analysis, and safety. Traffic Engineering Interns will be exposed to various challenges, projects, and technologies related to traffic operations, safety, anddesign, and will complete tasks both in the office and in the field as needed.

Essential Function

  • Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions for Complete Streets corridors and major highway systems.
  • Assist with the preparation of design plans for traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control, lighting, work zones, toll systems, and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
  • Perform field investigations, collect and compile traffic data, evaluate traffic safety and operational conditions for all road users, and develop recommendations for improvements.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree inCivil Engineeringwith an interest intransportation
  • Proficient knowledge ofMicrosoft Office products(Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent written andoral communicationskills
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Classwork in traffic engineering
  • Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ITE)
  • Applicable prior internship experience
  • Working knowledge ofMicroStation/CAD, GIS, Synchro, Vissim, HCS
  • Exposure to traffic engineering references (MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines)
