Patent Agent (Computer Science/Electrical Engineering)

Direct Counsel is seeking a Patent Agent to join a highly regarded Am Law 100 firm. This position is available in Charlotte, North Carolina; Raleigh, North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, California; New York, New York; San Francisco, California; Silicon Valley, California; or Washington, D.C.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a Patent Agent with 2+ years of experience and a strong technical background in computer science or electrical engineering to join a nationally recognized Intellectual Property practice. The role focuses on preparing and prosecuting patent applications for cutting-edge technologies while collaborating directly with inventors and attorneys.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare, draft, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications involving emerging technologies.

  • Conduct technical discussions with inventors to identify and evaluate patentable inventions.

  • Perform novelty, patentability, and freedom-to-operate (clearance) searches.

  • Draft comprehensive patent applications and respond to Office Actions before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Work closely with attorneys to develop patent prosecution strategies and negotiate claim scope with patent examiners.

  • Prepare reports, portfolio analyses, and supporting documentation for patent portfolio management.

  • Advise clients on patent strategy and intellectual property protection for innovative technologies.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics.

  • Minimum of 2+ years of patent prosecution experience as a Patent Agent.

  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is preferred or required, as applicable.

  • Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to computer software, electrical engineering, or emerging technologies.

  • Technical experience in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data science, Internet of Things (IoT), wireless communications, semiconductors, sensors, optics, or related technologies is a plus.

  • Strong technical writing, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to manage multiple matters in a collaborative environment.
