What does a computer programmer do?

A computer programmer designs, tests, writes, debugs, and maintains the computer program code. The coding language is written for the computer to be able to comprehend it and take specific actions according to those commands. Computer programmers can work with existing code or create something entirely new. The objective of coding is to develop programs that act on specific controls and behaviors. Coders need to be able to work with specialized algorithms, logic, and app domain, as well. But the other key goal of a computer programmer is to design interfaces that regular non-technical users can easily understand and use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving skills, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with software development tools, version control systems like Git, and sometimes certifications in specific languages or frameworks are commonly required. Attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure high-quality, efficient code development and effective teamwork in rapidly evolving technical environments.

What are some typical challenges computer programmers face when working on large team projects?

Computer programmers working on large team projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating code changes, maintaining consistent coding standards, and managing dependencies between different components. Effective communication and the use of version control systems like Git are essential to prevent conflicts and ensure smooth collaboration. Additionally, programmers must often adapt to varying coding styles and workflows, making flexibility and a collaborative mindset important for success in team environments.

Work EnvironmentOften works in coding, debugging, and maintaining softwareDesigns, develops, tests, and maintains software applications
Industry UsageCommonly employed in IT, software firms, and tech departmentsFound in a wide range of industries including tech, finance, healthcare

While both roles involve coding and software creation, Computer Programmers primarily focus on writing and debugging code based on specifications, whereas Software Developers are involved in designing and building complete software solutions. The roles often overlap, but Developers typically have broader responsibilities in the software development lifecycle.

How much do computer programmers get paid?

Computer programmers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but the median annual wage in many regions is around $70,000 to $85,000. Skilled programmers with knowledge of languages like Java, Python, or C++ and experience with software development tools tend to earn higher salaries, especially in tech hubs or specialized fields.

Job description

Join our team as a CNC Programmer, where you'll play an important role in producing high-quality precision components. In this position, you'll develop programs from engineered drawings, set up and operate CNC turning and milling machines, and use precision measuring instruments to inspect parts and ensure they meet our quality standards. You'll make process adjustments as needed to maintain accuracy and consistency while also completing daily inspection records, labor reporting, and scheduled machine maintenance. We value attention to detail, craftsmanship, and a commitment to excellence, and we're excited to welcome someone who takes pride in their work.

Review operation travelers, engineering drawings, and work instructions to plan each job, select the appropriate tools and materials, and determine the most efficient machining methods and setups.

Set up CNC turning and milling machines by installing tooling, developing and loading CNC programs, and selecting optimal cutting speeds, feeds, machining sequences, and depths of cut.

Properly load, center, chuck, and fixture parts to ensure accurate machining.

Monitor machine performance throughout production, inspect tooling for wear, and make adjustments as needed to maintain quality and process control.

Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments to verify parts meet print specifications before and during production.

Operate multiple machines simultaneously when production requirements call for it.

Report worn, damaged, or depleted tooling to the Team Leader or Supervisor to ensure uninterrupted production.

Use a variety of precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, verniers, thread gauges, and plug gauges, to verify dimensional accuracy.

Safely use cranes, dollies, and carts to transport materials, work-in-process, and completed parts throughout the facility.

Maintain an organized work area by properly storing tooling, inserts, and point-of-use materials using established labeling and identification systems.

Keep machines, tools, and work areas clean and well-maintained to support a safe and efficient work environment.

Follow all established operating procedures and quality standards while performing daily responsibilities.

Proactively identify and report safety concerns, helping to maintain a safe workplace for everyone.

Support the team by performing other duties and special projects as assigned by the Team Leader or Supervisor.

Experience programming CNC mills and lathes using Mastercam, Fusion 360, GibbsCAM, or similar CAM software.

Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or other CAD software.

Experience with FANUC, Haas, or similar CNC controls.

Strong knowledge of G-code/M-code programming, tooling selection, speeds and feeds, and blueprint interpretation, including GD&T.

Experience with precision measuring equipment and quality inspection processes.
