Position Summary
The Volunteer Programs Specialist is responsible for facilitating interpretive programs and performing administrative duties that support the Guest Engagement Ambassador (Volunteer) Program. This position is flexible and accommodates ever-changing job responsibilities and business needs.

We have grown to what now encompasses 56 acres of naturalistic wildlife habitats in a lush, tropical garden setting with wide-ranging activities. The Zoo, accredited by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), offers popular educational programming, fun recreational amenities, up-close animal encounters and engaging seasonal events for which it has won awards as one of the country's most family-friendly zoos.

Your day to day
Essential Functions (Including, but not limited to):
  • Conducts all activities in alignment with AZA standards and guidelines, all relevant laws and regulations, safety standards, and standards that ensure animal welfare.
  • Supports Guest Engagement Ambassadors and daily volunteer operation.
  • Facilitates interpretive programs offered by ZooTampa's Guest Engagement Ambassador Program. (75% in park programs/25% office duties)
  • Interacts with the public by answering questions and delivering conservation messages.
  • Performs administrative duties such as recording service hours, entering data, preparing newsletters, and supporting volunteers.
  • Supports ongoing volunteer and intern training efforts.
  • Provides daily volunteer support and documents data.
  • Writes articles for the monthly newsletter.
  • Assists with the preparation of supplies/materials necessary for programs, which may include researching information and developing visual aids.
  • Offers ideas and recommendations on program changes and improvements to Volunteer Programs.
  • Acts as a positive role model for new volunteers and interns.
  • Maintains strong working relationships with Zoo departments to help ensure the overall success of programs.
  • Ensures a high level of service and positive experience for volunteers, interns, staff, and guests.
  • Attends training classes and volunteer events as assigned to develop new skills and support the needs of the team.
  • Demonstrates commitment to inclusivity and fosters a culture of belonging in all aspects of the volunteer and intern program.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of programs offered by ZooTampa's Guest Engagement Ambassadors.
  • Provides support for Guest Engagement operations as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

What are we looking for?
Qualifications:
  • Degree or equivalent background in environmental education, biology, interpretation, or conservation.
  • CIG certification preferred

Skills and Experience:
  • Knowledge of a variety of environmental, conservation, and interpretive programs as well as experience presenting in a public setting to a variety of age levels preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to varying situations.
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to take initiative, produce work independently, and to act on behalf of a team.
  • Ability to work with all ages and provide a high level of service to Zoo visitors, program participants and Zoo staff.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and contribute effectively, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, related software, and audio/visual equipment; familiarity with Office suite.

Additional Requirements
  • Must be comfortable working around various species of animals.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to west central Florida (i.e. heat, rain, or cold).
  • Must be able to maintain control during emergencies that may arise.
  • Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
