JOB POSITION #109: Public Works Intern

NUMBER OF VACANCIES:1

DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Water/Wastewater Division

WORK LOCATION: West Annex, 805 Municipal Drive

PAY CLASS: Temporary

PAY RANGE: $20.00/hour

DAYS WORKED: Varied

TYPE OF POSITION: Temporary, Part-Time (Max paid time 20 hrs/wk)

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Works under the guidance of a public works Division Administrator.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees.

Assists the Water/Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Division with projects relating to system collections and the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Assists and manages ongoing division projects with little oversight to successful conclusion.

Assists with Division contract management and reporting.

May assist with developing drawing documentation for all disciplines utilizing AutoCAD/AutoCAD Civil 3D.

May use GIS base map related to public works utilities and infrastructure.

May assist in scanning, and preparation of engineering drawings for department projects.

May perform technical research in regard to capital improvement projects.

Assists in the development of assigned public works projects.

Works closely with public works inspectors, surveyors, and staff under the direction of the Division Adminsitrator in reviewing deeds, easements, plats, computation, plans and drawings.

Reports findings and makes recommendations to supervisor.

Responds to inquiries relating to engineering procedures on specific projects.

Assists with performing inspections, reviews plans, maps, profiles and specifications. Completes mathematical calculations required to complete survey data.

Assists with field work related to collections infrastructure and maintenance activities.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Requires current student status in a college or university, with a preferred major in civil or mechanical engineering, or engineering technology, discipline.

Valid New Mexico or state of current residency driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.

Ability to observe changes to enhance projects and assist with oversights.

Must possess a working knowledge to understand and interpret working plans and drawings.

Must be able to effectively communicate, both orally and written, with employees, contractors, other governmental agencies, City officials, and the general public in person or on the telephone.

Conduct research as necessary to assist in compiling data for engineering reports.

Must be able to work with minimal direction, following initial instructions in an accurate and timely manner. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in the English language. Ability to meet time and cost constraints with accuracy, following appropriate guidelines.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Must be able to operate with proficiency a personal computer, various software packages, with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and a cellular phone. AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge preferred.

Work is performed mostly in an office setting and may remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hand to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; employee is occasionally required to smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
