Civil Engineering Internship - Roadway Design
Raleigh, NC

Job Summary
The Roadway Design Intern will join our team for a 12-week internship in the Raleigh, NC office. As a Roadway Design Intern at ICE, you will gain valuable industry experience by working with our Roadway team. Internships with ICE allow you to continue your education with a real-world experience that will enhance your future academic experiences. There is room for growth within our organization for dedicated civil engineering professionals. All employment offers are contingent upon the applicant successfully completing drug and background screenings. Internships provide an opportunity to be part of a diverse and engaged community of professionals and to be treated as a respected and valued member of the ICE team. Once qualified candidates have been identified, the recruiting team will schedule interviews.
Responsibilities:
  • Collect and analyze data for the preparation of road and highway designs.
  • Perform roadway and highway design calculations.
  • Conduct investigative analyses toward completion of assigned design tasks.
  • Assist with the preparation of design drawings and/or specifications.
  • Roadway/surface design and other applicable design specifications as well as state and local design requirements.
  • Working with engineers on isometric designs and assisting project managers with design review, permitting, and proposal efforts.

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated adeptness in research and resource utilization.
  • Proficiency in both independent work and collaborative teamwork.
  • Displayed enthusiasm and eagerness to excel in a competitive, fast-paced industry.
  • Capable of effectively collaborating with project managers and engineers.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Office suite, AutoCAD, MicroStation Inroads/Geopak, and/or OpenRoads is desired.
  • Excellent mathematical skills and aptitude.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Strong organizational and planning capabilities.
  • Familiarity with job cost analysis, scheduling, safety protocols, and construction principles.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Must complete a pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.
Requirements:
  • Must be actively pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited college or university
  • Academic Juniors and Seniors preferred.
  • Prior internship experience preferred, but not required.

Internships do not always include mentorship; however, we believe it is a crucial part to the success of our program. ICE interns are paired with more experienced staff members in order to provide guidance and support throughout the internship process. They will report directly to a team lead who will provide regular feedback, special training, guidance, evaluation, and support. The lead will provide information about their career path, as well as assisting the intern with exploring career opportunities at the firm, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources.
We foster collaborative learning environment where interaction with our dedicated team of engineers encourages students to develop ideas and make mistakes. Collaborative learning also involves learning from peers and fellow interns. The primary goal of the internship is to gain as much experience as possible. While an intern may not have major tasks assigned to them, they should pay close attention to all the steps that go into completing the project. At the end of the internship, the intern should be confident to individually manage project tasks and work independently. ICE’s dedicated recruiting team will assist the intern with full-time employment opportunities, once they are ready to graduate.
Work Environment amp; Physical Requirements
This position predominantly involves up to 8 hours per day at a computer workstation, with occasional standing and walking. The employee may occasionally lift lightweight office supplies and materials, typically not exceeding 20 pounds. The office environment is indoors, characterized by controlled temperatures and minimal exposure to adverse conditions. Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods.
Expected Hours of Work
The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily. Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule. This is an onsite position reporting to the ICE office 5 days a week.
