What is a computer programmer internship?

Computer programmer internships are temporary, entry-level positions designed to give students or recent graduates hands-on experience in software development. Interns work under the guidance of experienced programmers, assisting with coding, testing, debugging, and maintaining software applications. These internships help individuals gain practical skills, build their professional networks, and improve their chances of securing a full-time programming job after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer intern, and why are they important?

To land an internship in software development, an aptitude for computer science and a track record of success in your academic program are key. However, aside from relevant knowledge, the ability to take initiative and a willingness to pitch in wherever you are needed are probably your two most important qualifications. Companies appreciate interns who can think on their feet and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision, so be sure your resume or internship application highlight projects you complete in the course of your studies as well as any leadership roles you undertake at your university or with extracurricular groups.

Job Title: Systems Engineer
Location: Norman, OK
Clearance: Public Trust
Program: RMSS
Company Description:
Centuria, a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), has been delivering IT, Engineering, and Scientific solutions to the Federal Government since 2002. During our two decades of service we have earned the trust and respect of our government clients for the simple reason that we have great people who are experts in their fields and take pride and ownership in everything they do.
The Washington Post has recognized Centuria Corporation as one of the top workplaces in the DC Metro area for 2024. This award celebrates nationally recognized companies that make the world a better place to work together by prioritizing a people-centered culture and giving employees a voice. The Top Workplaces USA award is based entirely on feedback from an employee engagement survey completed by the employees of participating workplaces. Centuria is honored to have been awarded this distinction.
Program Description:
Centuria Corporation is seeking a Systems Engineer to join our team in Norman, OK, supporting the National Weather Service (NWS) Radar Operations Center (ROC). You will become an integral part of the Systems Engineering team within the Engineering Branch, which serves as the technical backbone for the NEXRAD network.
The Systems Engineering team acts as the primary technical authority for the radar network's computer systems, telecommunications, and security infrastructure. In this role, you will support the Engineering Branch by navigating complex feasibility studies, implementing NOAA-directed secure benchmark configurations, and analyzing radar performance data. From reviewing complex design modifications to ensuring compliance with federal Information System policies, this program offers the opportunity to directly impact the reliability of the nation's weather infrastructure.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide system design and requirements analysis for complex systems.
  • Conduct feasibility, cost/benefit, and alternatives analysis for modifications and large-scale product improvement programs.
  • Develop documentation including technical specifications, design documents, and system integration plans.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful integration of hardware, software, and systems components.
  • Perform system integration and testing activities to validate system functionality and performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to system design, integration, and performance.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends related to computer systems and architecture.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering is desired. A degree in another technical discipline may be substituted depending on other qualifications, and length and type of specialized experience.
  • Familiarity with wide-area networking concepts (MPLS, BGP, satellite comms, microwave, 4G/5G wireless, or VSAT - even at a conceptual level)
  • Strong hands-on experience with Linux (Red Hat / RHEL or Embedded Linux preferred) - including basic system administration, scripting, and software development
  • Proficiency in a programming/scripting language. Ex: Python, Matlab or Expect scripting
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, Ethernet, routing concepts) and basic configuration experience (Cisco IOS is a plus)
  • Experience with hardware integration and troubleshooting - assembling computers/servers, cabling, power systems, or working in a computer rack environment
  • Comfortable with analyzing electronics systems and using standard electronics lab equipment (oscilloscope, digital multimeter, function generator, programmable power supplies)
  • Basic experience with hardware and software testing.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, and to create requirements lists or test procedures
  • Willingness to work directly with sites and provide Tier 3 technical and engineering support via phone, email, or in person.
  • Willingness to travel

Great-to-Have Experience:
  • Any exposure to RF communication systems, radar systems, weather radar, or real-time/high-availability systems (even academic projects or internships).
  • Experience with embedded systems or real-time Linux environments
  • Hands-on work with rack-mounted servers.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB / Simulink
  • Experience using AutoCAD, Visio, or similar drafting and documentation tools.
  • Any experience or coursework involving Machine Learning / LLMs / AI (especially locally-hosted models)
  • Project coordination or leadership experience in school, internships, or personal projects (e.g., leading a capstone team or managing a small budget)
  • Advanced experience with the Microsoft Office Suite
