What Are the Qualifications to Get a Computer Programmer Internship?

To land an internship in software development, an aptitude for computer science and a track record of success in your academic program are key. However, aside from relevant knowledge, the ability to take initiative and a willingness to pitch in wherever you are needed are probably your two most important qualifications. Companies appreciate interns who can think on their feet and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision, so be sure your resume or internship application highlight projects you complete in the course of your studies as well as any leadership roles you undertake at your university or with extracurricular groups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Programmer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer Intern, a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures is essential, typically supported by coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and version control systems like Git, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are standout soft skills for this position. These competencies are crucial for successfully contributing to development projects, adapting quickly, and supporting team goals in a fast-paced tech environment.

Is 23 an hour good for an internship?

For a computer programmer internship, earning $23 an hour is generally considered above average, as many internships pay between $15 and $20 per hour. However, pay can vary based on location, company size, and required skills such as coding languages or certifications. It's also important to consider the experience gained and whether the internship offers additional benefits or training.

How to get programming internships?

To secure a computer programmer internship, build a strong foundation in programming languages like Python, Java, or C++, and create a portfolio of projects to demonstrate your skills. Apply to internships through company websites, university career centers, or job boards, and consider obtaining relevant certifications or participating in coding competitions to enhance your application.

What are computer programmer internships?

Computer programmer internships are temporary, entry-level positions designed to give students or recent graduates hands-on experience in software development. Interns work under the guidance of experienced programmers, assisting with coding, testing, debugging, and maintaining software applications. These internships help individuals gain practical skills, build their professional networks, and improve their chances of securing a full-time programming job after graduation.

Is 22 too old for an internship?

Computer Programmer internships are open to individuals of various ages, including those in their early twenties. Age is generally not a barrier, and many internships value skills, such as programming languages and problem-solving abilities, over age. Employers often seek motivated learners regardless of age, especially for entry-level positions or internships aimed at skill development.

What are the big 4 internships?

The Big 4 internships typically refer to internship programs at Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms offer opportunities in areas such as consulting, audit, and advisory services, often requiring strong analytical skills and relevant coursework. Job description

Flight Control Firmware Engineer
Lafayette, LA · Full-Time · Built on the Bayou — Bringing the Future of Flight to Life
*The description below is a best-case candidate.  This specific role could potentially be a part-time internship for someone in the 3rd / 4th year of a computer science-related field.

DMR is building next-generation drone technology right here in Lafayette, LA. Our flight controllers are flying production missions today — multi-IMU redundancy, dual GPS+RTK, dual-antenna heading with magnetometer fusion, and layered safety strategies. We need a firmware engineer ready to own this system, push it forward, and help us scale.

What You'll Do
•        Own the flight control firmware — analyze, document, and evolve a mature production codebase covering multi-IMU redundancy, dual GPS+RTK, and dual-antenna heading fusion.
•        Lead feature development and stability tuning for RTK and 4G modules.
•        Develop and maintain sensor drivers: IMU, GNSS, magnetic compass, barometer, Hall/ultrasonic flow meters, and radar.
•        Implement production-line calibration methods and support test fixtures.
•        Maintain the flight control protocol SDK; coordinate integration with application and cloud teams.
•        Refine flight modes and safety strategies; contribute early research into RTK base stations and centrifugal nozzles.
•        Close the loop on mass-production issues and ensure firmware consistency across batches.

What You Bring
•        Bachelor's degree or above in Automation, Electronics, Aerospace, Computer Science, or related field.
•        5+ years of embedded flight control firmware experience, including at least one drone controller taken from development through mass production.
•        Strong STM32 (H7 preferred) skills — both bare-metal and RTOS environments.
•        Solid knowledge of IMU/GNSS-RTK/compass drivers and multi-sensor fusion (Kalman/ESKF), attitude estimation, and control algorithms.
•        Familiarity with CAN, RS-485, serial, PWM, ADC, and other embedded bus interfaces.
•        Self-directed — you can troubleshoot independently and drive work to completion.

Bonus Points
•        Agricultural or crop-protection drone experience: spraying, spreading, seeding, swath-width route planning, or resume-spraying.
•        RTK high-precision positioning, dual-antenna heading, or 4G base station integration experience.

DMR is headquartered in Lafayette, LA — the heart of Cajun Country. We move fast, build real products, and take pride in doing it here. If you're ready to own the firmware on drones that are actually flying, we want to hear from you.
