Position Summary:
The Entry-Level CNC Lathe Programmer - Intern supports machining and programming activities by learning to create, edit, verify, and troubleshoot CNC lathe programs. This early-career role provides hands-on exposure to machining principles, CNC programming fundamentals, dimensional inspection, and safe shop practices. Under the guidance of experienced machinists and engineers, the intern will assist with program edits, tooling review, part measurement, process documentation, and general shop support while developing strong technical and professional skills.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist with reading, interpreting, and making simple edits to CNC lathe programs.
  • Apply foundational understanding of G-code, M-code, tool offsets, work offsets, and canned cycles.
  • Support machine setup activities by helping verify tools, offsets, fixtures, and machining steps.
  • Reference engineering drawings and apply basic GD&T to ensure program accuracy.
  • Use CAD/CAM software at a basic level to view 2D/3D models and support toolpath preparation.
  • Perform dimensional checks using calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, and other basic metrology tools.
  • Follow inspection tolerances, surface finish expectations, and quality requirements.
  • Comply with all shop safety rules; use required PPE; follow safe equipment operation practices.
  • Support 5S activities, workstation organization, and general shop housekeeping.
  • Practice basic troubleshooting, ask questions, and follow defined machining and programming procedures.
  • Communicate clearly with operators, supervisors, and mentors regarding program changes or issues.
  • Maintain dependable attendance, professionalism, and a willingness to learn in a hands-on environment.
Requirements:
  • Candidates must be a current full time student and have completed their sophomore year by June 2026 and be in good academic standing
  • Be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining principles.
  • Familiarity with CNC lathe components.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and basic GD&T.
  • Understanding of cutting tools, materials, feeds, speeds, and chip control.
  • Understanding of G-code and M-code fundamentals.
  • Ability to read and make simple edits to CNC programs.
  • Knowledge of tool and work offsets.
  • Exposure to canned cycles and Fanuc-style controls.
  • Basic understanding of 2D/3D CAD models.
  • Introductory exposure to CAM software.
  • Basic computer and file-management skills.
  • Ability to use calipers, micrometers, and depth gauges.
  • Understanding of dimensional inspection and tolerances.
  • Awareness of surface-finish requirements.
  • Understanding of shop safety rules and proper PPE usage.
  • Awareness of safe machine operation and 5S principles.
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and follow process instructions.
  • Basic troubleshooting ability.
  • Clear communication with operators, supervisors, and engineering staff.
  • Dependable attendance; professional and responsible conduct.
  • Exposure to multi-axis lathes or live tooling.
