A Computer Programmer Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where a programmer is hired for a specific duration or task. Contractors typically develop, test, and maintain software applications based on client requirements. They may work independently or through an agency, often with flexible schedules. Unlike full-time employees, contract programmers usually do not receive benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Compensation is often higher to account for this.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer contract?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer Contract, you need strong programming knowledge, problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, experience with version control systems like Git, and familiarity with development environments are essential, while certifications such as Microsoft or Oracle developer credentials are valued. Excellent time management, communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new projects or teams will set you apart in contract roles. These skills and qualities ensure that contract programmers can efficiently deliver high-quality solutions, quickly integrate into diverse work environments, and meet the expectations of multiple clients.

What types of projects do computer programmer contracts typically work on, and how is workflow managed?

Computer Programmer Contractors often work on a variety of projects, including developing new software applications, updating existing systems, debugging code, or creating automation scripts based on client requirements. Workflows are usually managed through tools like Jira or Asana, and contractors collaborate remotely or on-site with development teams, business analysts, and project managers. Deadlines and deliverables are typically set by the client, and contractors may need to juggle multiple assignments simultaneously. The dynamic nature of contract work offers exposure to different industries and technologies, providing valuable experience and potential for career advancement.

What is the hourly rate for a computer programmer?

The hourly rate for a computer programmer varies based on experience, location, and specialization, but typically ranges from $25 to $100 or more. This role is responsible for translating detailed shop drawings into efficient, accurate CNC program, minimizing material waste, and ensuring parts are produced to specification on our CNC machines. The ideal candidate has hands-on nesting software experience and a solid understanding of structural steel fabrication and bevel/weld-prep requirements.

Essential Job Functions
  • Import part geometry (DXF/DSTV/STP or similar) and prepare accurate CNC programs for CNC machinery.
  • Nest parts efficiently using nesting software to minimize scrap and maximize material yield.
  • Program bevel cuts, copes, and part geometry to job specification and applicable structural steel standards.
  • Review shop drawings and structural steel detailing packages (e.g. from Tekla, Advanced Steel, or similar) to verify part accuracy before programming.
  • Set and adjust cut parameters (amperage, cut height, speed, kerf) for different material thicknesses and types.
  • Troubleshoot programming or nesting errors and coordinate with shop floor personnel to resolve cutting issues in real time.
  • Collaborate with detailing, and production teams to support on-time job releases.
  • Maintain accurate records of nest files, cut lists, and material usage reporting.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to nesting efficiency, cut quality, and program turn around time.

Qualifications and Requirements
Required:
  • Basic computer proficiency (file management, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Excel)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy under production deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, cut lists, and fabrication specifications.
  • Working knowledge of basic geometry and machining terms (e.g., radius, chamfer, fillet, bevel angle, tolerance)

Preferred:
  • Prior experience with CAD/CAM nesting software systems (Shopdata, OmniWin, ProNest, or similar).
  • Experience with structural detailing software (Tekla, Advanced Steel, or similar)
  • Background in structural steel fabrication
