What is a computer networking internship?

A Computer Networking Internship is a temporary position that provides hands-on experience in maintaining, troubleshooting, and configuring network systems. Interns often assist with network security, hardware setup, and software updates under the supervision of IT professionals. This role helps students or entry-level candidates gain practical knowledge of networking protocols, infrastructure, and troubleshooting techniques. It is an opportunity to develop technical skills, work with real-world networking environments, and prepare for a career in IT or network administration.

What kinds of projects or tasks do computer networking interns usually work on during their internship?

As a Computer Networking Intern, you may assist with setting up and configuring network equipment, monitoring and documenting network performance, and troubleshooting connectivity issues. Interns often support senior network engineers during upgrades or maintenance, and may help with implementing security measures or performing routine system checks. Many internships also include exposure to real-world projects, such as deploying new hardware or optimizing existing network infrastructure. This hands-on experience gives you valuable insight into daily operations and helps build skills for a future career in IT or network administration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a computer networking internship, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Networking Intern, you typically need a foundational understanding of networking concepts, protocols, and hardware, often gained through coursework in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with tools like Wireshark, basic command-line utilities, and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns excel when troubleshooting and collaborating with IT teams. These abilities are crucial for successfully supporting network operations and gaining hands-on experience in a professional environment.

Job description

Do you want to solve complex network management problems using machine learning to improve experiences for millions of customers? Join Amazon Infrastructure Engineering's AI/ML team to design and deploy innovative ML solutions that transform how businesses operate at scale.

We are building the AI/ML capabilities that power Amazon's infrastructure operations. Our team partners across diverse groupsโ€”from network engineers to product managersโ€”to identify and solve the most impactful technical challenges. We're focused on leveraging machine learning to improve service performance, durability, cost, and security across our systems. When you join us, you'll work alongside engineers who are passionate about the intersection of software development and machine learning, and you'll contribute to our vision of creating more intelligent, efficient infrastructure solutions. Our customers benefit directly from the innovations we develop in unison.

As an Machine Learning Engineer, you will partner across diverse teams, projects, and environments to help solve a myriad of complex business problems. Youโ€™ll bring a passion for the intersection of software development with generative AI and machine learning.

Key job responsibilities

The ideal candidate will:

  • - Solve complex technical problems, often ones not solved before, at every layer of the stack.
  • - Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative ML solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.
  • - Build high-impact ML solutions to deliver to our large customer base.
  • - Build high-quality, highly available, always-on products.
  • - Research implementations that deliver the best possible experiences for customers.
  • - Participate in design discussions, code review, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • - Work cross-functionally to help drive business solutions with your technical input.
  • - Work in a startup-like development environment, where youโ€™re always working on the most important stuff.
A day in the life

As a Machine Learning Engineer on our team, you'll focus on developing ML software solutions that address complex network management challenges. Your day might include partnering with infrastructure teams to understand technical requirements, prototyping new ML approaches to optimize network performance, and working through code reviews with colleagues across the organization. You'll move between hands-on development work, design discussions with stakeholders, and research into emerging techniques that could enhance our solutions. You'll have the opportunity to see your work deployed to our large customer base and gather feedback that shapes the next iteration of improvements.
