Job description

JOB SUMMARY
This position reports to the Mentor, OH office onsite at least three days per week (currently Tuesday-Thursday).
This internship role supports the corporate IT Network team under the direct supervision of the Network Manager. The intern will gain hands-on experience assisting with the implementation, maintenance, and support of network solutions for Heilind Electronics and all its global employees and affiliates.
We are seeking a motivated intern to serve in a temporary role as the Network Administration & Engineering INTERN to assist our IT team with day-to-day network operations. Under the guidance of experienced network engineers, the intern will support the maintenance and monitoring of enterprise network infrastructure. This is an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills in network operations, Cisco technologies, and enterprise IT support in a global electronics distribution environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with monitoring Cisco network equipment, including switches, routers, wireless controllers, and firewalls, under the direction of senior network staff.
  • Support wireless infrastructure. Assist with monitoring and basic troubleshooting of wireless networks and access points.
  • Help monitor network performance issues, flagging bottlenecks and escalating to the senior engineer for resolution.
  • Support network security procedures, including assisting with documentation of firewall rules, VPNs, and access controls.
  • Assist with telecom support, including basic tasks related to VoIP and unified communications systems.
  • Help document SD-WAN configurations and assist with deployment tasks under engineer supervision.
  • Assist with routine network audits, supporting updates and configuration change documentation.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to support alignment of network services with operational needs.
  • Assist with assessing network usage and supporting infrastructure to accommodate growing demands.
  • Support compliance efforts with industry standards and regulatory requirements for network security and reliability.
  • Perform accurate and detailed logging and tracking of all changes and incidents in the landscape
  • Help stage and document firmware & software updates, supporting the update process for network switches, routers, wireless devices, and related infrastructure.
  • Help maintain asset inventory, warranty, and contract maintenance logs on all equipment.
  • Assist with providing timely and professional resolution on reported issues per IT SLA's, escalating as appropriate.
  • Support day-to-day operations of network LAN/WAN/Firewall/telecom and related equipment
  • Assist employees with basic connectivity issues, escalating complex problems to senior staff.
  • Role may require periodic off-hours and weekend support on an occasional basis

Education and Experience
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science, Information Technology, Networking, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Basic familiarity with Cisco technologies, including switches, routers, and firewalls, through coursework or lab experience is preferred.
  • Exposure to networking concepts such as LAN/WAN, routing and switching, TCP/IP, VLANs, and wireless is a plus.

Skills and Requirements
  • Foundational understanding of network protocols, routing, switching, and basic security concepts.
  • Eagerness to learn Cisco technologies and enterprise network operations in a hands-on environment.
  • Basic proficiency with network troubleshooting and a logical, methodical approach to problem-solving.

  • Work Schedule 8am-5pm M-F
  • Must be able to report to Mentor, OH office and work onsite during scheduled days, traditionally Tuesday - Thursday (remote Mon & Fri)
  • Working knowledge with Microsoft Office products, Exchange, SharePoint\OneDrive, Windows Server, Active Directory, and Cisco wireless.
