What is the difference between Computer Networking Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectComputer Networking EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and testing network solutionsManaging and maintaining existing network infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping network architecture, troubleshooting complex issuesMonitoring network performance, configuring devices, user support

While both roles involve working with networks, Computer Networking Engineers focus on designing and building network systems, whereas Network Administrators manage and maintain those networks on a daily basis. The roles often overlap, but the engineer's role is more project-based and technical, while the administrator handles ongoing operations.

Are computer networking engineers still in demand?

Yes, computer networking engineers are in demand due to the ongoing need for secure and reliable network infrastructure in organizations. They are essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining networks, with skills in network protocols, security, and certifications like CCNA often required. The role is expected to grow as technology advances and organizations expand their digital operations.

What does a computer networking engineer do?

A computer networking engineer designs, implements, and maintains computer networks such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. They troubleshoot network issues, configure hardware and software, and ensure network security using tools like routers, switches, and firewalls. Certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are often helpful in this role.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior System Engineer (Virtual Private Cloud Team) based in Netherlands.

As a Senior System Engineer, you will help build and operate the core networking layer of a large-scale cloud infrastructure platform. You will work on the Virtual Private Cloud environment that enables secure, isolated and reliable connectivity for virtual machines and cloud workloads. Your work will directly support essential services including load balancing, firewalls, security groups, internet connectivity and private networking. You will develop both control-plane and data-plane components while improving the performance, scalability and resilience of critical network services. The role involves solving complex distributed networking challenges and automating interactions across multiple cloud services. You will work in a highly technical, international engineering environment where reliability is a core priority and your contributions can influence foundational cloud infrastructure. This is an opportunity to work on challenging networking problems while helping shape the future of large-scale AI and cloud platforms.

Accountabilities
  • Develop and maintain control-plane and data-plane components for cloud network services.
  • Build and improve core Virtual Private Cloud capabilities that provide reliable IP-based connectivity across cloud workloads and physical infrastructure.
  • Increase the scalability, performance and reliability of critical networking services.
  • Develop new networking functionality, including capabilities such as IPv6 support, service endpoints, VPC peering and Layer 7 load balancing.
  • Improve internal system architecture and optimize interactions between networking and related cloud services.
  • Design and implement automation for complex cross-service interaction scenarios.
  • Conduct load testing and performance analysis to identify bottlenecks and ensure services operate reliably at scale.
  • Investigate and resolve complex networking and system-performance issues.
  • Develop high-performance, production-quality code for systems operating within a large-scale cloud environment.
  • Contribute to the resilience and fault tolerance of networking infrastructure, ensuring services remain operational during partial system failures.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to deliver reliable and secure networking capabilities across the broader cloud platform.
  • Participate in technical discussions, design reviews and coding interviews as part of the engineering development process.
Requirements
  • Strong software engineering experience with the ability to write reliable, efficient and high-performance production code.
  • Professional proficiency in C/C++ or Go, with the willingness and ability to work with both languages.
  • Solid understanding of computer networking and practical experience with routing network traffic.
  • Ability to reason about complex systems, performance characteristics and interactions between distributed services.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to diagnosing reliability and performance issues.
  • Experience working with large-scale infrastructure, cloud platforms or networking systems is highly valuable.
  • Familiarity with VPP, DPDK or the Linux kernel networking subsystem is an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of virtual networking, network overlays, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) or Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is a plus.
  • Understanding of network protocols, routing and tunneling technologies is beneficial.
  • Experience with BGP, MPL or Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) is an additional advantage.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and programming languages as required by evolving infrastructure needs.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a technically sophisticated engineering team.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment where reliability, ownership and continuous improvement are highly valued.
  • Willingness to participate in technical coding interviews as part of the recruitment process.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Opportunities for career growth, continuous learning and professional development.
  • Flexible working environment with a strong emphasis on ownership and autonomy.
  • Collaborative and innovative engineering culture.
  • Opportunity to work on impactful cloud and AI infrastructure projects.
  • International environment with highly skilled engineering and research teams.
  • Opportunity to solve challenging problems in large-scale networking, distributed systems and cloud infrastructure.
  • Meaningful opportunity to influence the reliability, scalability and evolution of foundational cloud services.
  • Fast-moving environment that encourages bold technical thinking and continuous improvement.
  • Trust-based culture where engineers have significant ownership over their work and technical contributions.
