Responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients of all age groups ina timelyandaccuratemanner usingappropriate venous, arterial, or capillary technique.All specimens are collected strictly following all related policies and procedures. As the face of the laboratory, staffare required tomaintainprofessional behavior and technical skills anddemonstratewell developed customer service skills.Independently performs select waived and moderately complex laboratory tests specifically trained for.Consultswithdirector, supervisors, and pathologists whenappropriate.

  • Accuratelyidentifiespatients prior to collection of specimens using two patient identifiers asestablishedby laboratory policy and appropriately labels andaccessionsthese specimens.All data is recorded asrequiredneatly and accurately.

  • Knows the requirements of blood specimens to be obtainedthrough the use ofthe Clinical Laboratory Testing Manual or otherappropriate testingmanuals.

  • Collects blood specimens and other approved diagnostic specimens based on the orders received and obtainsappropriate specimensfollowing established laboratory protocols.

  • Observes and enforces Safety and Infection Control policies and procedures.Assistsin the corrective action of any hazards that may exist.

  • Demonstratesa high levelof customer service skills when interacting with patients, their families, and all clients.

  • Works independently and organizes work to meet established guidelines and records, such as turn-around times, whilemaintainingpatient confidentiality.

  • Cleans and stocks the phlebotomy carts/trays and drawing rooms,maintaininga neat and orderly workplace.

  • Participates in the orientation and training of new phlebotomists/staff.

  • Performs clerical duties asrequired.

  • Possesses basic working knowledge and use of the Laboratory Information System and the Hospital Information System.

  • Responsible for operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation specificallytrained for. Communicates problems toappropriate staffmembers.

  • Independently performs analysis to include waived and moderate complexity testing, for tests specifically trained for, to providetimelyandaccuratediagnostic information to healthcare providers.

  • Analyze and document quality control data,makesjudgments concerning the results, andtakesappropriate actiontomaintaintest accuracy and precision.

  • Monitors the collection, transportation, storage, identification, and processing of specimens to ensure specimen integrity prior to testing.Takesappropriate actionif acceptable criteria are not met. Recognizes deviation from expected results, analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles and laboratory policies.

  • Adheres to written laboratory policies and procedures, personnel policies, and administrative policies. Also performs work activities in a manner thatensurecompliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Maintain flexibility with laboratory scheduling to help fulfill staffing requirements.

  • Interact with hospital staff, physicians, and clients in a professional manner.

  • Activelyparticipatesin departmental meetings, in-services, and other continuing education to keep abreast ofnew technologiesand changes in the lab.

  • Maintain an adequate level of supply inventories.

  • Participates in writing, revising, and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Serves on laboratory committees as requested by a supervisor.

  • Performs other related tasks as delegated by a supervisor.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and proceduresin order toensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

Shift: Full Time 10 hour shifts

General Requirements:

  • Associates or bachelor'sdegree in a science-related field such as a biological or chemical from an accredited institution preferred.

  • High School diplomarequired.

  • Mustbe BLS certified within 3 months of hire.

  • Demonstrates professionalism and teamwork.

  • Has knowledge of and canoperatelaboratory related computer software and systems.
