Job description

Performs specimen computer accessioning (order entry) into the LIS, specimen labeling, aliquoting and
processing including Roche 8100. Calls panic values and answers clinician phone inquiries. Pick-up lab
specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations. Process samples to be sent to reference labs.


Prepare specimens for lab analysis by centrifugation, “pouring off” of aliquots,
specimen “rack assembling,” delivery of specimens to the lab(s) for analysis. Enter data
from Lab Requisitions: generation of “draw lists” for Phlebotomy services; entering
specimens into LIS computer, and provide results to clinician’s inquiries. Calling/logging
“Panic Values.” Answer phones; route calls – technical and others to appropriate lab.
Perform all tasks necessary for specimens for “Reference Lab., e.g., filling out forms,
physical preparation of specimens; packing/handling specimens. Transport specimens
to Laboratory Central Processing area. Deliver completed laboratory results to the
patient care areas. Maintain a manual back-up system, e.g., log and accession books, to
be implemented in the event of “Computer Down-Time.” Monitor pneumatic tubes for
specimen arrival. Enter specimen into the LIS system, i.e., test requests, ordering
physician, patient demographics.


High School graduate or GED. Good computer skills as well as
organizational, written, communication and verbal skills. Bilingual Preferred
English/Spanish.
