Entity: Aultman Alliance Community Hospital

Position Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist the provider in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.  To exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.  To assume responsibility and accountability for accuracy of procedures performed.

Department Summary:

The Laboratory provides clinical testing in the areas of hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank.  Primary testing clients include the Emergency Department, IMCU, PCU, 3W and other hospital departments, in addition to serving Aultman Health System outpatients and Aultman Laboratory Services Clients.  This clinical laboratory offers an extensive test menu and performs close to 350,000 tests a year.

Job Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Certification as a Medical Lab Technician (preferred) or certification eligible, from an approved agency.

  • Maintain competence in the following testing areas: Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Blood Bank (if applicable).
  • Assist accessioning as needed to receive and process laboratory specimens.

  • Perform instrument/equipment maintenance according to department guidelines and manufacturer's specifications.

Working Conditions:

  • This unit requires 24/7 coverage.
  • Work 7.5, 8, 10, or 12 hours per day which is determined by the Assistant Laboratory Manager.
  • Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotation as needed.
  • Work weekends and holidays assigned by the Assistant Laboratory Manager.
  • Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage.
  • Cross training in all areas in the department is determined by the Assistant Laboratory Manager.

Department Specific Working Conditions:

  • Perform routine and special procedures on patient specimens, which include chemical testing, cell morphology and enumeration, blood bank duties, and constituent analysis according to directions in the procedure manuals.
  • Log-in specimens as needed and report test results utilizing computer hardware and software.
  • Assume responsibility for quality control, calibrations and instrument check procedures in cooperation with the technical specialist.  Perform routine and some preventive maintenance procedures on equipment on the department.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting to solve problems with tests or equipment.
  • Assist in receipt and stocking of supplies and reagents, maintain log and/or labels reagents when put into us, and prepare reagents and controls as needed.
  • Obtain blood specimens for patients using approved phlebotomy procedure for analysis in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Answer the telephone using proper etiquette, transferring or responding as indicated.
  • Rotate weekends, holidays, and departments as scheduled.
  • Assume responsibility for reading and following policies outlined in the Colleague Handbook and the Laboratory Policies/Procedures in Policy Medical.
  • Perform CAP surveys and competency verifications as directed.
  • Assume assigned responsibilities of the section in the absence of the Assistant Laboratory Manager.
  • Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments (Relias and Media Lab) on a regular basis.
  • Perform all other duties as directed by the Assistant Laboratory Manager, manager or Pathologist.
