What does a computer integrated manufacturing engineer do?

A Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing automated manufacturing systems that use computers to control the entire production process. They integrate hardware and software solutions to streamline operations, improve product quality, and increase efficiency. CIM Engineers work with robotics, computer-aided design (CAD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems to ensure the seamless flow of information and materials throughout the manufacturing process.

How does a computer integrated manufacturing engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Engineer, you'll frequently work cross-functionally with production, quality assurance, design engineering, and IT teams. Your role involves integrating computer systems with manufacturing processes, so you'll often coordinate with software developers to customize automation solutions and with production managers to ensure smooth implementation on the shop floor. Regular meetings and clear communication with these teams are essential for troubleshooting issues, optimizing workflows, and ensuring that technological upgrades align with manufacturing goals. This collaborative environment provides valuable opportunities to broaden your technical knowledge and build strong professional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer integrated manufacturing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Integrated Manufacturing Engineer, you need a strong background in manufacturing processes, automation, and systems engineering, usually supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Proficiency with CAD/CAM software, PLC programming, robotics, and familiarity with ERP systems and lean manufacturing certifications are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for optimizing production and driving process improvements. These skills are vital for integrating advanced technologies in manufacturing, enhancing efficiency, and maintaining competitive operations.

What is the difference between Computer Integrated Manufacturing Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectComputer Integrated Manufacturing EngineerManufacturing Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or related; certifications like CIM or CAD software proficiencyBachelor's in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering; similar certifications often required
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and optimizing automated manufacturing systems in factories or plantsDeveloping manufacturing processes, improving production efficiency, and troubleshooting in production facilities
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by manufacturing firms focusing on automation and integrated systemsCommon across various manufacturing sectors including automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods

The main difference is that Computer Integrated Manufacturing Engineers focus on designing and managing automated, computer-controlled manufacturing systems, while Manufacturing Engineers concentrate on developing and improving manufacturing processes. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications but differ in their focus areas within the manufacturing industry.

Is there a demand for computer integrated manufacturing engineers?

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) engineers are in high demand due to the increasing adoption of automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing systems across industries. Employers seek professionals skilled in CAD/CAM software, PLC programming, and systems integration to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.

Job description

MANUFACTURING

Manufacturing Engineering powers Rocket Lab's factories from concept to fullscale production. We turn early ideas into manufacturable designs, build and optimize the systems that make them real, and constantly push for faster, better, smarter ways to build. We engineer the factories that build the rockets, boosting quality, cutting cost, and accelerating build rate.

MANUFACTURING ENGINEER I - ASSEMBLY & INTEGRATION

This role focuses on improving manufacturing processes by conducting feasibility studies, supporting product design for manufacturability, and leading factory setup and optimization. It involves troubleshooting production issues, collaborating with cross-functional teams, driving process improvements, and supporting organizational efficiency through effective change management and business system enhancements.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

  • Prepare feasibility studies and conduct manufacturing technology Research & Development projects
  • Partner with our Design Engineering teams to incorporate Design for Manufacture into our products to ensure robustness and manufacturability at scale
  • Engineer and deliver our factories - design, procure, install, validateassembly, testand verification processes
  • Support Development builds to uncover early learnings and resolve issues to accelerate the production ramp up
  • Take engineering ownership of production lines to remove blockers, improveyieldand increase build efficiency
  • Triage and diagnose failures, conduct deep technicalinvestigationsanddeterminethe right path forward including risk mitigation actions and root cause resolution
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to resolve complex issues
  • Drive process improvements across manufacturing, testand integration
  • Contribute to change management, assessing risk and impact of design or process changes
  • Support business system and process improvements to drive increased organizational effectiveness and efficiency

YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or similar
  • Technicalexperience in a Manufacturing, Production, or Process Engineering environment
  • Hands-on experience solving problems in complex manufacturing systems
  • Ability to effectively deliver on complex assignmentswith autonomy
  • Foundational knowledge in complex manufacturing processes

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

  • Working experience with environmental acceptance/production acceptance testing, such as vibration, shock, thermal, and vacuum
  • Understanding of instrumentation, interfaces, and sensors including power supplies, oscilloscopes, serial devices, switch topologies, accelerometers, thermocouples, RTDs, and 4-20mA sensors
  • Experience with designing, implementing, and supporting a production line and/or build area
  • Experience transitioning products from design to production as a part of cross-functional team in a fast-paced, iterative design environment
  • Demonstrated experience with DFMEA, PFMEA methodologies, Fault Tree Analysis, Pareto analysis, root cause and corrective action

This position may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, computer work, and occasional exposure to moderate levels of noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.
