Storion Energy is hiring a Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer with a focus on automated assembly to join our corporate engineering team in Alpharetta, GA. Storion is a battery component manufacturer specializing in vanadium electrolyte production and assembly of stack-power assemblies that serve the flow battery industry in the US. We strive to drive flow battery adoption through cost-effective, readily available electrochemical components required for large-scale flow batteries.
Reporting through the manufacturing engineering team, you will be a key contributor to the design, build, and continuous improvement of automated assembly systems and manufacturing equipment. You will work alongside chemical, electrical, and controls engineers as we scale a novel production process from pilot to full operations. This role sits at the intersection of mechanical design and automation - we are looking for someone equally comfortable designing a fixture as they are specifying a motion system or integrating a vision sensor.

Responsibilities
Automated Assembly System Design
  • Design and develop automated assembly equipment, workcells, and end-of-line test systems for flow battery component manufacturing
  • Specify and integrate mechatronic system components, including servo drives, stepper motors, pneumatic actuators, linear stages, and vision systems
  • Design custom tooling, workholding, fixtures, and jigs tailored to automated assembly processes
  • Develop pneumatic and electrical circuitry to support mechanization, including component specifications and panel layout
  • Produce 3D models and 2D drawings of parts and assemblies; SolidWorks preferred
  • Demonstrate concepts through sketches, mock-ups, and functional prototypes
  • Validate designs through testing, trials, and iterative improvement
  • Apply engineering best practices, including design for manufacturability (DFM) and design of experiments (DOE) to minimize design iterations
  • Perform analytical work, including static and dynamic stress analysis, tolerance stack-ups, and FEA as needed

Controls Integration & Automation Support
  • Collaborate with controls engineers to define motion profiles, I/O requirements, and sensor integration for automated equipment
  • Author or support PLC, HMI, and robotic programs for assembly, material handling, and manufacturing equipment
  • Support SCADA and data acquisition integration on automated workcells to enable process monitoring and traceability
  • Participate in controls cabinet design reviews and support field wiring and commissioning activities
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and electromechanical issues on automated equipment

Continuous Improvement & Project Execution
  • Manage manufacturing and facility projects, including scope definition, RFQ distribution, resource planning, budget tracking, and on-time delivery
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives targeting setup time reduction, scrap reduction, and overall yield improvement
  • Develop upgrade plans for automated equipment and support standardized rollout across similar equipment
  • Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities while maintaining or improving quality and throughput
  • Isolate critical process data outputs and define key performance indicators for automated assembly processes

Technical Support & Collaboration
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Storion's manufacturing processes and product requirements
  • Support maintenance personnel through training and equipment re-engineering activities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with automation equipment vendors, integrators, and component suppliers
  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation, including design files, revisions, BOMs, and work instructions
  • Foster strong working relationships with the product engineering team, operations team, quality, and vendors
  • Work effectively at all levels across the organization

Qualifications
Education, Experience, Certifications:
  • BS or greater in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a closely related field
  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience in manufacturing or process engineering with a focus on automated assembly systems
  • Experience in a production or industrial manufacturing environment is preferred
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification is a strong plus

Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in 3D mechanical design; SolidWorks strongly preferred
  • Experience with CAM generation; MasterCAM preferred
  • Hands-on experience specifying and integrating mechatronic components: servo and stepper systems, pneumatics, linear motion, sensors, and vision systems
  • Familiarity with PLC programming and industrial automation platforms
  • Proficiency in generating engineering tolerances and performing tolerance analysis
  • Capability to work with scripted programming languages; Python preferred
  • Strong computer skills, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and database software

Competencies:
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze automated assembly processes for improvements in efficiency, quality, equipment layout, workflow, and safety
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven, hands-on approach
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, lean environment
  • Experience developing training materials and technical documentation for new equipment or process changes
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across engineering, operations, and leadership teams

Work Environment
  • You will work in both office and manufacturing environments. Battery components manufacturing employs chemicals, heat, and heavy equipment, and as such, you will at times, be exposed to fumes, noise, dirt, hazards, and chemicals, and in all cases will be provided with appropriate PPE.
  • You must be able to see, hear and speak; able to sit, stand for at least two hours at a time, sit, bend, crawl, squat, kneel and climb; able to use both arms and hands to use a computer and peripherals and lift 40 pounds from floor level; able to work below ground level in confined spaces and on stationary or mobile elevated platforms; able to wear respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as required; able to climb stairs.
  • Travel may be required for this position, but not more than 25%.
