Information Systems Engineer III

We are looking for an IAM Security Operations Specialist to join our Identity & Access Management team. In this role, you will be the operational heartbeat of our identity security strategy. You will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of cloud security access controls across our platforms and will act as the primary operational partner for other departments.
About UIT: University Information Technology (UIT), the central IT service provider for the University of Utah, reports to the U's Chief Information Officer and is responsible for many of the U's shared IT services including the wired and wireless network; Campus Information Services (CIS) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration; digital learning technologies; information security; software licensing; and a host of other IT systems and services.

Responsibilities
Information Systems Engineer, III

Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Act as the primary operational point of contact for inbound IAM and cloud security requests from engineering, product, and business teams.
Cloud Access Implementation: Execute and provision secure access controls across our multi-cloud environment (AWS, Azure, or GCP) following the principle of least privilege.
Queue & Incident Management: Manage the IAM ticketing queue (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow), triaging, troubleshooting, and resolving access issues and security requests efficiently.
Operational Monitoring & Auditing: Continuously monitor IAM logs, identify access anomalies, and conduct regular access reviews to ensure compliance with our security policies.
Process Optimization: Help the team document standard operating procedures (SOPs) and identify opportunities to streamline or automate recurring operational requests.
Emergency Response: Assist in responding to and remediating active identity-related security alerts or unauthorized access incidents.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Information Systems Engineer, III: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences
Experience: 2+ years of experience in Security Operations (SecOps), IAM Operations, IT Support Tier 3, or a closely related technical operations role.
Cloud Fundamentals: Hands-on experience navigating and managing permissions within cloud platforms (e.g., AWS IAM, Azure AD/Entra ID, Google Cloud IAM).
Core Identity Knowledge: Solid understanding of user lifecycle management, role-based access control (RBAC), and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
Ticketing & Workflow Tools: Experience managing and resolving high-volume technical requests using ticketing systems.
Communication Skills: Strong customer-service mindset with the ability to collaborate patiently and effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
Familiarity with modern Single Sign-On (SSO) platforms like Okta, Ping Identity, or Azure AD.
Basic scripting knowledge (e.g., Python, PowerShell, or Bash) to help automate routine tasks.
Relevant foundational certifications (e.g., Security+, Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner).
