Description

The primary role of the Mechanic’s Helper is to assist the Mechanics in the repair of fleet and equipment in order to optimize the needs of operations and minimize equipment down time.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Assist with the inspection, adjustment and repair of power train, electrical, suspension, brake, hydraulic and air systems on vehicles and equipment.

2. Assist in the execution of preventative maintenance program by helping to perform oil and fluid changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, CHP BIT inspections, etc.

3. Assist the Mechanic with on-road emergency service calls.

4. Learn to utilize vehicle computer electronics systems to help interpret failure modes to initiate repairs.

5. Assist in performing data entry, maintaining accurate records and preparing various reports upon request, paying close attention to accuracy and detail.

6. Utilize service manuals as well as online technical resources, service literature and diagnostic software.

7. Observe and comply with hazardous waste and material handling and disposal procedures and regulations as set forth by local, state and federal environmental and health agencies.

8. Observe and comply with all applicable safety regulations, rules, policies and procedures.

9. Maintain clean, safe and organized workspace.

10. Maintain collaborative working relationship with drivers, operators and coworkers and communicate timeline for downed vehicles.

11. Participate in external, Department and Company-wide trainings to increase skill sets and improve service.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Methods, tools, equipment and systems used in the inspection, diagnosis and repair of trucks and heavy equipment.

• Vehicle computer diagnostic systems and fleet management software.

• Federal, state and local job site health and safety rules, regulations and best practices.

Ability to:

• Learn diesel and/or compressed natural gas engines, heavy equipment mechanical components and parts.

• Maintain a positive attitude with coworkers.

• Proactively establish trust and credibility with coworkers by maintaining accountability.

• Contribute to the team dynamic by promoting inclusion, support and collaboration amongst coworkers.

• Take initiative, self-manage time and productivity through multitasking.

Education, Training & Experience

1. Experience servicing diesel engines preferred.

2. High school diploma or GED preferred.

3. Experience in the resource recovery industry a plus.

4. Certifications a plus.
