Software Systems Staff Engineer

Location: Asheville, NC

Salary: $135,000-$140,000 + Comprehensive Benefits

About the Opportunity

Our client, a global engineering and technology manufacturer, is seeking a Software Systems Staff Engineer to join their advanced product development team.

This position focuses on the development of embedded software and system architecture for highly engineered electromechanical products. You'll work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams developing software that controls motors, sensors, valves, actuators, power electronics, and electronic control systems used in demanding real-world applications.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced embedded software engineer looking to take ownership of software architecture, requirements development, system integration, and validation while collaborating with global engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software for advanced electromechanical control systems.
  • Define software system requirements and technical specifications.
  • Support overall software architecture and system design.
  • Develop software features from concept through release.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineers, Applications Engineers, and Hardware Engineers throughout development.
  • Translate system requirements into software requirements and functional specifications.
  • Support software modeling, simulation, integration, verification, validation, and testing.
  • Lead software design reviews and technical discussions.
  • Define software qualification and validation plans.
  • Develop system-level and unit-level test strategies.
  • Support SIL and HIL testing activities.
  • Interface with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and customers.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable quality, regulatory, and functional safety requirements.
  • Support software release management and configuration control.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of embedded software or embedded systems development experience.
  • Experience with software requirements, architecture, design, integration, or verification.
  • Experience with requirements management tools.
  • Familiarity with Polarion, Jira, Bitbucket, or similar development platforms.
  • Experience developing software test plans and validation strategies.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle and configuration management.
  • Experience working closely with hardware engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of hardware/software interfaces.
  • Experience with SIL and HIL testing.
  • Familiarity with functional safety principles, risk assessments, or FMEA.
  • Basic knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink or model-based development.
  • Understanding of motors, sensors, actuators, power electronics, or embedded control systems.
  • Strong communication and project leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of embedded software development experience.
  • Functional Safety (ISO 26262 or similar) experience.
  • Cybersecurity experience for embedded systems.
  • Experience with controls simulation or powertrain software.
  • Experience with harsh-environment electronic systems.
  • Familiarity with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, multimeters, and electrical testing equipment.
  • Experience writing Statements of Work (SOWs).
