This is a Part-Time Pool Posting in our Continuing Education Workforce Development (CEWD) department for available assignments during the academic year. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
This is a part-time Instructor position at Alvin College. This position delivers engaging, hands-on instruction for youth programs, including summer camps. The instructor designs and leads interactive engineering activities, ensuring a safe and inspiring environment in accordance with Alvin College policies. By fostering creativity and problem-solving, the instructor helps campers achieve educational outcomes, enhances camper engagement, and supports student retention while contributing to the camp's mission of inspiring future engineers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops and delivers age-appropriate engineering activities, such as building projects and hands-on experiments, to engage students.
  • Ensures a safe learning environment by adhering to safety protocols and supervising campers during activities.
  • Follows curriculum outlines and objectives, adapting as needed to meets student needs.
  • Evaluates participation and progress, providing feedback to support learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate with staff & faculty to coordinate logistics, such as field trips and supply management, curriculum and content delivery.
  • Maintains open communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and updates.
  • Adheres to Alvin Community College's policies and procedures.
  • Attend institutional meetings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbent typically works in a classroom or workshop environment and uses a computer, telephone, and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of a classroom or camp setting. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday and will supervise active youth, requiring constant attention to safety.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to twenty (20) pounds. The employee may occasionally need to set up or move lightweight engineering project materials or equipment
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's degree in engineering, Education, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One (1) year of experience working with youth in an educational or camp setting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Basic computer proficiency using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Basic proficiency in online tools such as Blackboard
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with campers, parents, and staff
  • Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and safe environment for youth
  • The instructor will frequently perform autonomously and must be self-motivated
  • Will be required to proceed with independent actions within mutually established guidelines and with minimal supervision from the CEWD Director of Workforce Programs
  • Must be flexible with the ability to work days, nights, and/or weekends with the understanding that available hours will be based on the needs of the program, not to exceed 19 hours per week
  • Must be flexible and understand that a minimum number of hours is not guaranteed and that classes may be canceled and/or rescheduled with minimal notice due to student need, student enrollment, and/or program needs

  • One (1) year experience designing or teaching hands-on engineering or STEM activities for children and young adults
  • Minimum (6) months experience in a youth program setting
