Job description

The Carthage College Department of Engineering seeks an Engineering Lab Manager to contribute to our Bachelor of Science Engineering and Bachelor of Arts Applied Engineering programs. Responsibilities of this role consist of management of Engineering lab spaces and departmental purchasing and supervision of student lab assistants and maker mentors. Candidates with a BS in Engineering with 10+ years of relevant industry experience or an MS in Engineering may additionally opt to teach up to one course per semester in the Engineering programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Highly organized with familiarity in general industrial and machine shop practices, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Ability to specify, order, install, and manage a wide range of high- and low-technology equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Experience developing and revising safety policies, procedures, and training materials, including instructional guides and safety documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering and Natural Sciences faculty, laboratory staff, students, and community partners.
  • Support the safe and efficient operation of engineering laboratories, studios, and machine shop facilities.
  • Preferred knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks or Inventor.
  • Familiarity with digital manufacturing technologies, including 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC milling.
  • Experience with welding and metal fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to train and instruct students in the safe operation of machine tools, including lathes, manual knee mills, band saws, and drill presses.
  • Assist students with building physical prototypes using digital manufacturing tools, machine tools, and metal fabrication equipment.
  • Supervise and manage student workers in engineering-related fabrication labs, makerspaces, and workshop environments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's level of education, or equivalent industry experience (7-10 years), in engineering, technology, science, manufacturing, graphic arts/design, technical education or related field.
  • Demonstrated record of managing engineering laboratories including safety policies, purchasing, and equipment oversight.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to safely and effectively operate equipment for machining, fabrication, and digital manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety protocols and procedures associated with machining, making, and fabrication environments including OSHA regulations.
  • Demonstrated record of, or potential for, engagement of undergraduate students in engineering laboratories, makerspaces, and fabrication environments.
  • Demonstrated record of, or potential for, successful undergraduate education in making and fabrication.
