What does a computer engineering intern do?

A Computer Engineering Intern assists with the design, development, testing, and maintenance of computer hardware and software systems. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers and may contribute to projects involving programming, circuit design, troubleshooting, or system optimization. Their responsibilities can include writing code, assembling hardware components, performing experiments, and documenting results. This role is designed to give students hands-on experience and help them apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering problems.

What types of projects or tasks can a computer engineering intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Engineering Intern, you can anticipate working on a mix of hardware and software projects, often supporting ongoing development or testing efforts. Typical tasks may include contributing to circuit design, debugging embedded systems, writing or optimizing code, and assisting with prototype validation. Interns frequently collaborate with senior engineers, participate in team meetings, and may be given independent assignments to develop technical and problem-solving skills. The internship environment is usually fast-paced, offering exposure to real-world engineering challenges and valuable mentorship opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, you typically need a foundation in computer engineering principles, programming languages like C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), hardware description languages, and basic circuit design tools is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly help interns stand out. These competencies enable effective contribution to engineering projects, smooth collaboration with teams, and rapid learning in a dynamic work environment.

What is the difference between Computer Engineering Intern vs Software Engineering Intern?

Job description

About Us
We're building the future of accounting. Our AI-powered agentic platform automates complex financial workflows - from reconciliation and audit prep to tax compliance and advisory - so accountants can focus on the work that actually matters. Backed by top-tier investors, we're a small, fast-moving team shipping product at a pace that would make most startups jealous.
The Role
We're looking for a Software Engineering Intern who's excited to build real features, ship real code, and see their work in the hands of real users - all in a single summer. You won't be working on a side project no one looks at. You'll be embedded in one of our product squads, contributing directly to our core platform alongside senior engineers, designers, and domain experts.
By the end of the summer, you'll have owned a meaningful project from scoping through delivery, presented your work to the company, and gained deep exposure to how AI agents, LLMs, and modern infrastructure come together to solve hard problems in finance.
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and ship features across our full stack (React/TypeScript front end, Python/FastAPI back end, PostgreSQL)
  • Work with LLM orchestration frameworks to develop, test, and improve our AI accounting agents
  • Collaborate with accountants and domain experts to understand real-world workflows and translate them into product
  • Write clean, well-tested code and participate in code reviews with experienced engineers
  • Tackle ambiguous problems - we'll give you ownership, context, and support, not a step-by-step playbook
  • Present your summer project to the full team at the end of the internship

What We're Looking For
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (expected graduation 2027 or later)
  • Strong fundamentals in at least one programming language (Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Go, or similar)
  • Familiarity with web development concepts (APIs, databases, front-end frameworks)
  • Genuine curiosity about AI/ML, large language models, or agentic systems - prior project work or coursework is a plus, not a requirement
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a bias toward action - you'd rather ship an imperfect v1 than deliberate forever
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset

Bonus Points
  • Experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) or prompt engineering
  • Exposure to accounting, fintech, or enterprise SaaS
  • Contributions to open-source projects
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP) or containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)

Why Join Us
  • Real impact: Your code will be in production, used by accountants at real firms, before you go back to school.
  • Learn fast: Daily exposure to AI agents, LLM engineering, and complex financial domain problems - the kind of experience that's hard to get anywhere else.
  • Great team: Small enough that everyone knows your name, senior enough that you'll learn from every conversation.
  • Career launchpad: Strong interns receive full-time return offers. Several of our current engineers started as interns.
