What does a computer engineering intern do?

A Computer Engineering Intern assists with the design, development, testing, and maintenance of computer hardware and software systems. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers and may contribute to projects involving programming, circuit design, troubleshooting, or system optimization. Their responsibilities can include writing code, assembling hardware components, performing experiments, and documenting results. This role is designed to give students hands-on experience and help them apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering problems.

What types of projects or tasks can a computer engineering intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Engineering Intern, you can anticipate working on a mix of hardware and software projects, often supporting ongoing development or testing efforts. Typical tasks may include contributing to circuit design, debugging embedded systems, writing or optimizing code, and assisting with prototype validation. Interns frequently collaborate with senior engineers, participate in team meetings, and may be given independent assignments to develop technical and problem-solving skills. The internship environment is usually fast-paced, offering exposure to real-world engineering challenges and valuable mentorship opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineering Intern, you typically need a foundation in computer engineering principles, programming languages like C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), hardware description languages, and basic circuit design tools is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly help interns stand out. These competencies enable effective contribution to engineering projects, smooth collaboration with teams, and rapid learning in a dynamic work environment.

Your Impact:
Communications and Social Media at Formlabs tells the story of our technology, our community, and the incredible things being built on our machines. We sit at the intersection of engineering, design, and digital content.
If you are a maker at heart who loves telling stories about awesome engineering - we want you as our Social Media Engineering Intern. In this role, you won't just talk about making things; you'll print, film, edit, and publish stories that inspire millions of creators worldwide.

  • Operate Independently & Collaboratively: Work self-sufficiently on quick-turn stories while integrating seamlessly into the larger social media team to support broader marketing initiatives.
  • Turn Tech into Content: Showcase physical parts, prints, and engineering projects in compelling, visual ways that resonate with engineers, artists, doctors, and makers alike.
  • Data-Driven Strategy: Support reporting and analytics to measure content performance, refine strategies, and optimize for reach and engagement.
  • Trendspotting: Spot real-time social trends, viral audio, and maker-community conversations, acting fast to translate them into relevant Formlabs content.

About You:
  • Hands-on Creator: You have hands-on experience with video editing software (Premiere, DaVinci, Final Cut, etc.) and a knack for creating engaging video content.
  • Curious & Technical Mindset: You enjoy physical making, tinkering, or understanding how things work. Experience with 3D design/CAD or 3D printing is a major plus!
  • Social Savvy & Fluent: Understanding of digital platforms (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube, LinkedIn) and what makes content go viral.
  • Storyteller: An eye for spotting incredible technical applications and turning them into compelling narratives that balance fun, humor, and professionalism.
  • Self-Starter & Fast-Paced: Comfortable taking an idea from concept to finished export on your own, while remaining adaptable and ready to balance multiple deadlines.

Intern Benefits & Perks:
  • Flexible Out of Office Plan - take time when you need it
  • Salaried bi-weekly pay schedule
  • Ample on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Catered on-site lunches (3x per week), snacks, beverages, & treats
  • Cohort-based social and professional development experience for interns
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And of course... unlimited 3D prints

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing, please apply. Help us build an inclusive community that will change the face of 3D printing.
