What is a computer engineer?

A computer engineer designs, researches, tests, and develops computer equipment and software such as circuit boards, chips, routers, and application programs. Computer engineers analyze complex equipment and systems to understand the best way to improve it. They create new types of information technology devices and use logic and reasoning to hone in on goals, test assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems. Engineers often work in teams and have to be able to communicate with other types of engineers, including non-technical team members. Computer engineers make sure that components fit together properly and function according to the latest software developments.

What kind of jobs do computer engineers have?

Computer engineers work in designing, developing, and testing computer hardware and software systems. They may be involved in areas such as embedded systems, network infrastructure, cybersecurity, and software development, often requiring knowledge of programming languages and engineering principles.

What are common challenges computer engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Computer engineers often collaborate with software developers, hardware designers, and project managers, which can present challenges in aligning technical requirements and communication styles. Ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of system limitations and integration points is crucial, as miscommunication can lead to project delays or rework. Staying adaptable and proactively clarifying expectations helps computer engineers navigate these collaborative environments successfully.

Job description

CAD Drafter/Engineering Technician
We are looking for a CAD Drafter / Engineering Technician to support our engineering team by taking on CAD drawing and drafting work, freeing up engineers to focus on higher-level design and problem-solving. This is a support role, not a design-ownership role - success here means the engineering team is measurably more productive because routine drafting, drawing updates, and testing/documentation support are handled well and reliably.
Beyond drafting, this person will help with product testing, data collection, and technical report writing at the direction of Engineering or Product Management, and will support engineering changes on legacy products through drawing updates, new drawing creation, and detailed review. A hands-on, detail-oriented problem solver with a solid grasp of GD&T and a genuine interest in firearms will be a strong fit.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Drafting & Design Support
• Create, update, and revise CAD drawings and models in SolidWorks to offload drafting and drawing-development work from the engineering team.
• Support engineering changes on legacy products, including drawing updates, new drawing creation, and detailed drawing review.
• Apply GD&T correctly and consistently when creating or reviewing drawings.
• Assist with developing and maintaining drafting standards and templates in support of engineering-led initiatives (not a primary responsibility of this role).
Testing, Data Collection & Reporting
• Support product testing at the direction of Engineering or Product Management, including test setup, execution support, and data collection.
• Write clear, well-organized technical reports summarizing test results and findings.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation of test data and results.
General Engineering Support
• Take on drafting and technical tasks delegated by engineers to free up their time for higher-level design work.
• Apply a hands-on, practical approach to troubleshooting drafting, fixture, or test setup issues.
• Maintain high attention to detail across all drawing, data, and documentation work.
Required Qualifications
• Associate's degree or technical certification in drafting, CAD, engineering technology, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• Solid CAD skills; experience with SolidWorks desired.
• Solid understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) is highly preferred.
• High attention to detail and strong organizational habits.
• A hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving.
• Ability to write clear, organized technical reports based on testing and data collection.
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with and interest in firearms design, manufacturing, or use - highly desired.
• Experience supporting engineering changes on legacy products.
• Experience with product testing, data collection, or lab/test environments.
• Exposure to or interest in helping develop drafting standards and documentation.
What Success Looks Like
• Engineers spend less time on routine drafting and more time on design work, because CAD and drawing tasks are reliably offloaded.
• Legacy product drawings are accurate, current, and correctly reflect engineering changes.
• Test reports are clear, accurate, and delivered on time to support engineering and product decisions.
• GD&T is applied correctly and consistently across the drawings this person touches.
Benefits
  • Medical, Dental, Vision
  • 401k with Match
  • PTO
  • Paid Holidays
