Schedule: 3 days a week (8 hour days)

Employment Type: Part Time | Non-Exempt

Hourly Rate: $20 - $25

Why This Role Matters

Every product we provide represents our commitment to quality, precision, and customer satisfaction.

At Flexible Metal, we're looking for a driven, detail-oriented Process Engineering Intern who's eager to gain hands-on experience improving real manufacturing processes. In this role, you'll help identify and implement process improvements on the production floor, turning data and observation into measurable efficiency gains.

If you're someone who's curious, analytical, and wants hands-on experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, we'd love to meet you.

Why You'll Love Working Here

  • Opportunities to learn new skills, cross train, and gain real-world engineering experience.
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) – Build ownership in the company's success while investing in your future.
  • Stable, growing manufacturing company with a strong reputation for quality.
  • Hands-on exposure to lean manufacturing tools and automotive production systems.
  • Supportive team environment where collaboration, quality, and respect come first.
  • Competitive pay.
  • Note: part-time roles are not eligible for benefits like medical/dental/vision, company-paid life insurance, PTO etc.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with time studies, process mapping, and workflow analysis to identify bottlenecks and process improvement opportunities.
  • Support implementation of lean manufacturing initiatives, including 5S, kaizen events, standard work development, and waste reduction projects.
  • Collect, analyze, and report production data related to cycle times, scrap rates, equipment performance, and labor efficiency.
  • Assist in developing and updating process documentation, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Participate in troubleshooting and root cause analysis (RCA) for quality and process-related issues.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and maintenance teams to support engineering trials and process validations.
  • Assist with the design, testing, and implementation of fixtures, tools, or process layout changes as assigned.

What Makes You Successful

You may be a great fit if you:

  • Enjoy analytical, detail-driven work.
  • Take pride in accuracy and follow-through.
  • Work well independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Stay curious and self-motivated in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Are comfortable navigating a manufacturing floor environment.

What You'll Bring

  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes, lean principles, or industrial systems (relevant coursework acceptable in lieu of work experience).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
  • Exposure to CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar) preferred but not required.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Must be currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.

Physical Requirements

This position splits time between a standard office environment and the manufacturing floor. Physical requirements include the ability to sit or stand at a workstation for extended periods, including computer use; stand and walk for extended periods on the shop floor; frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and twist; occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds; and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and hearing protection, when on the production floor.
