What is a Computer Engineer Internship?

A Computer Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in computer engineering. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with tasks such as software development, hardware design, testing, and troubleshooting. The internship provides hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to real-world projects, helping interns develop technical skills and industry knowledge. It also allows interns to network with professionals and can often lead to full-time employment after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Computer Engineer Intern expect during their internship?

As a Computer Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that may involve software development, hardware testing, or assisting with system integration tasks. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, participate in team meetings, and contribute to debugging or documentation efforts. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, offering plenty of opportunities to learn new technologies and engineering best practices. Interns are also encouraged to ask questions and seek mentorship, which helps in building both technical and professional skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer architecture, programming languages such as C/C++ or Python, and coursework toward a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with development environments, version control systems like Git, and basic hardware or software debugging tools is often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn quickly are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, collaborate with team members, and rapidly acquire new technical knowledge essential for professional growth.

Job description

About SimpliSafe

We're a high-tech home security company that's passionate about protecting the life you've built and our mission of keeping Every Home Secure. And we've created a culture here that cares just as deeply about the career you're building. Ours is a no ego culture of collaboration and innovation where those seeking their next challenge can find big opportunities and make a huge impact on the lives of all those who we protect. We don't just want you to work here. We want you to grow and thrive here.

We're embracing a hybrid work model that enables our teams to split their time between office and home. Hybrid for us means we expect our teams to come together in our state-of-the-art office on two core days, typically Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday - working together in person and choosing where they work for the remainder of the week. We all benefit from flexibility and get to use the best of both worlds to get our work done.

Why are we hiring?

Well, we're growing and thriving. So, we need smart, talented, and humble people who share our values to join us as we disrupt the home security space and relentlessly pursue our mission of keeping Every Home Secure.

What You'll Do

SimpliSafe's Device Cloud Services team is on a mission to level up the cloud-based systems that empower customers to interact with their home security systems from anywhere in the world. We're looking for a motivated Software Engineer 1 to join our backend team, learn how we solve large-scale distributed problems, and start contributing to the systems that give customers real-time control and visibility into their security systems. Because we deal with life safety, reliability, simplicity, and performance are our key pillars.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Work closely with senior engineers and your manager to learn our codebase, systems, and engineering practices while contributing to real features from day one.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools, including Claude Code, to accelerate coding, testing, and debugging, and continually build your skill at working effectively alongside AI in your day-to-day engineering work.
  • Design and build well-tested software components under the guidance of more senior engineers, growing your ability to deliver simple, reliable solutions at scale.
  • Write and maintain automated tests so your code stays reliable and safe to change and refactor.
  • Debug issues, fix bugs, and make incremental improvements to existing systems as you build context on how our services work.
  • Document the systems you work on so they can be understood and maintained by others.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, both giving and receiving feedback, as a way to sharpen your engineering skills.
  • After an onboarding and ramp-up period, join the on-call rotation as a first responder for software owned by your team, with support and mentorship from more senior engineers.

What You'll Bring

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, completed or expected soon (or equivalent practical experience).
  • A solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design principles.
  • Exposure to at least one modern programming language (e.g., C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, C++, Go, Python) through coursework, internships, or personal projects.
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Curiosity, humility, and a genuine desire to continuously learn and grow.
  • Comfort working collaboratively in a team environment and communicating clearly about your work.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Internship, co-op, research, or personal/open-source project experience building software.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) or building/deploying cloud-based services.
  • Coursework or projects involving distributed systems, APIs, or IoT/embedded devices.
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum practices.

What Values You'll Share

  • Customer Obsessed - Building deep empathy for our customers, putting them at the core of our work, and developing strong, long-term relationships with them.
  • Aim High - Always challenging ourselves and others to raise the bar.
  • No Ego - Maintaining a "no job too small" attitude, and an open, inclusive and humble style.
  • One Team - Taking a highly collaborative approach to achieving success.
  • Lift As We Climb - Investing in developing others and helping others around us succeed.
  • Lean & Nimble - Working with agility and efficiency to experiment in an often ambiguous environment.

What We Offer

  • A mission- and values-driven culture and a safe, inclusive environment where you can build, grow and thrive
  • A comprehensive total rewards package that supports your wellness and provides security for SimpliSafers and their families (For more information on our total rewards please click here)
  • Free SimpliSafe system and professional monitoring for your home.
  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that bring people together, give opportunities to network, mentor and develop, and advocate for change.

The target annual base pay range for this role is $75,100 to $100,100.

This target annual base pay range represents our good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this role. We use a market-based compensation approach to set our target annual base pay ranges and make adjustments annually. We carefully tailor individual compensation packages, including base pay, taking into consideration employees' job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and other relevant business factors.

Beyond base pay, we offer a Total Rewards package that may include participation in our annual bonus program, equity, and other forms of compensation, in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and lifestyle benefits. More details can be found here.

We're committed to fair and equitable pay practices, as well as pay transparency. We regularly review our programs to ensure they remain competitive and aligned with our values.

We wholeheartedly embrace and actively seek applications from all individuals, no matter how they identify. We are committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we believe our work is enriched when we incorporate a multitude of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. We want everyone who works here to thrive and contribute to not only our mission of keeping every home secure, but also to making our workplace safe and supportive for others. If a reasonable accommodation may be needed to fully participate in the job application or interview process, to perform the essential functions of a position, or to receive other benefits and privileges of employment, please contact careers@simplisafe.com.
