The Position
The City of Riverside, Public Utilities Department (RPU) is accepting applications for the position of TECHNICAL INTERN to fill one (1) vacancy in the Water DivisionThis is a temporary part-time, non-benefited position with a 1000 hour limit per fiscal year. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
The Technical Intern is a temporary entry-level, classification in which students, with current enrollment in, or recent completion within the last five years, of a program from an accredited post-secondary educational or vocational institution with major coursework related to a specialized field of study, gain experience in assisting staff in the performance of technical duties. The Technical Intern class is distinguished from the Administrative Intern and Management Intern classes by the specific focus of technical knowledge, skills, and abilities applied to the performance of occupational duties.
Under general supervision the Technical Intern will perform entry level technical duties; to assist in various types of work designed to complement and supplement existing City programs; and to do related work as required.
Work Performed
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform basic technical assignments in area of specialization.
  • Assist technical staff and respond to requests for information.
  • Collect, summarize, and analyze information and statistics on existing programs and services.
  • Prepare and evaluate reports.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of procedures, guidelines, and standards.
  • Perform research in the resolution of technical concerns and/or problems.

Qualifications
Education: Current enrollment in, or completion within the last five years of, a program from an accredited post-secondary educational or vocational institution with major coursework related to a specialized field of study.

Highly Desirable Qualifications:
  • Possession of, or currently pursuing a Bachelor/Master degree in Engineering: Civil, Chemical, Environmental, Mechanical, or a related field of study
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ESRI ArcGIS software
  • Computer aided drafting and design skills
  • Coursework in Hydraulics, Fluid Mechanics, Water/Wastewater Treatment, Water Quality, and/or Statistics
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Temporary Variable & Full-Time
Employees hired in a temporary position working "variable" part-time hours (less than 30 hrs/week) may be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon meeting full-time eligibility at the end of their measurement period (12 months). Employees hired in a temporary full-time (more than 30 hrs/week) position will be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon hire.
All temporary employees are automatically enrolled in a mandatory Deferred Compensation plan in lieu of Social Security. Temporary employees are also eligible for paid sick leave as outlined in the Fringe Benefits and Salary Plan, Section 7. Employees may be eligible for CalPERS membership upon hire if they are already a CalPERS member, Tier designation is based on membership date. If no prior CalPERS membership exists, employees must meet CalPERS eligibility requirements before being brought into CalPERS membership.
