Job Summary:
As a Lead Database Engineer in the Database Engineering and Operations team, you will design, build, maintain, and support enterprise database solutions across on-premises and AWS platforms. In addition to hands-on engineering, this role provides technical leadership, architecture guidance, and operational governance for database platforms including Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL, and AWS RDS.
The ideal candidate has deep database administration expertise and the ability to lead database initiatives, mentor engineers, and drive reliability, performance, and modernization across database platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership
  • Lead the design, implementation, and support of enterprise database platforms including Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL, and AWS RDS.
  • Define and enforce database architecture standards, best practices, and operational procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to database engineers and administrators.
  • Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and cloud teams to support business-critical systems.
  • Lead database modernization initiatives including cloud adoption, automation, and performance optimization.

Database Engineering & Administration
  • Perform database administration including database design, installations, upgrades, configuration, replication, backup & recovery, and performance monitoring.
  • Implement and maintain high availability and disaster recovery solutions such as Oracle Data Guard, SQL Server Always On, log shipping, and replication.
  • Ensure database availability, reliability, and service level objectives (SLOs) across environments.
  • Manage AWS RDS database services including provisioning, scaling, monitoring, and optimization.

Performance & Optimization
  • Lead database performance tuning initiatives across platforms.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to connectivity, performance, deadlocks, blocking, replication, backup failures, and security.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement long-term solutions to improve stability.

Automation & Platform Efficiency
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tooling using shell scripting or similar technologies.
  • Drive improvements in database deployment automation, monitoring, and operational efficiency.
  • Implement database monitoring frameworks and alerting systems.

Governance & Collaboration
  • Work with engineering teams to ensure database standards, security policies, and compliance requirements are met.
  • Participate in capacity planning, platform roadmap planning, and technology evaluations.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple database projects across business units.
  • Provide leadership during incident management and critical production issues.

Operations
  • Participate in on-call rotation supporting 24x7 production environments.
  • Drive improvements in incident response, reliability engineering, and operational processes.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 8-10+ years of database engineering/administration experience.
  • 5+ years of Oracle database administration experience.
  • 3+ years of DB2 administration experience.
  • Experience supporting SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Experience with AWS database services (RDS preferred).
  • Oracle OCP/OCM, IBM DB2 Database Administrator, or AWS Certified Database / Solutions Architect certifications are highly desirable and demonstrate advanced expertise in enterprise database platforms

Technical Skills
  • Strong expertise in Oracle 12c, 18c, 19c administration.
  • Strong knowledge of performance tuning, backup & recovery (RMAN, logical backups), upgrades, and security.
  • Experience implementing Data Guard, replication, and high availability solutions.
  • Experience managing SQL Server HA solutions (Always On, log shipping, replication).
  • Hands-on experience with DB2 and PostgreSQL administration.
  • Experience working with AWS RDS, Redshift, and cloud database services.
  • Strong shell scripting or automation scripting skills.
  • Familiarity with database tools such as OEM, SQL Developer, and monitoring tools.

Leadership & Soft Skills
  • Proven ability to lead database engineering initiatives and mentor team members.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience working in Agile environments with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.

Nice to Have
  • Experience managing SAP databases on Oracle or HANA.
  • Experience with database migration to cloud platforms.
  • Exposure to DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.

This is a hybrid role. Tuesday through Thursday are in-office days at BJ's Club Support Center in Marlborough, MA and Monday and Friday are remote days.
In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ's Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is $128,500.00 - $164,000.00
