What is a computer data scientist?

A Computer Data Scientist is a professional who uses advanced analytical, statistical, and programming skills to collect, analyze, and interpret large sets of data. They apply techniques from computer science, mathematics, and statistics to extract meaningful insights, build predictive models, and help organizations make data-driven decisions. Computer Data Scientists often work with big data technologies, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization tools to solve complex business problems. Their work supports strategic planning, product development, and operational improvements in various industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer data scientist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Computer Data Scientist, you need a solid background in statistics, mathematics, programming (often Python or R), and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools like SQL, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, and experience with big data platforms such as Hadoop or Spark are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and effective communication skills help translate data findings into actionable business insights. These skills are essential for extracting meaningful information from complex datasets and driving data-driven decision-making.

How do computer data scientists typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Computer Data Scientists often work closely with teams such as engineering, product management, and business analytics to translate complex data insights into actionable strategies. They regularly participate in cross-functional meetings to understand business problems, define data requirements, and present findings. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as data scientists must ensure their models and analyses align with organizational goals and can be practically implemented by other departments.

What is the difference between Computer Data Scientist vs Data Analyst?

AspectComputer Data ScientistData Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Data Science, or related fields; often includes programming certificationsBachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields; certifications like Microsoft Data Analyst are common
Work EnvironmentTypically in tech companies, research labs, or data-driven organizations; involves complex data modeling and machine learningIn various industries like marketing, finance, healthcare; focuses on data visualization, reporting, and basic analysis
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in tech, finance, healthcare, and research sectors for advanced data modelingWidely used across industries for business insights and reporting

Computer Data Scientists and Data Analysts both work with data, but Data Scientists focus on complex modeling, machine learning, and programming, often requiring advanced degrees. Data Analysts primarily handle data reporting, visualization, and basic analysis. The roles differ in complexity, tools, and typical responsibilities, though they share foundational skills in data handling.

Are data scientists still in demand?

Data scientists remain in high demand due to the increasing reliance on data-driven decision making across industries. They typically require skills in programming, statistical analysis, and machine learning, and often work with tools like Python, R, and SQL. The role is expected to grow as organizations continue to prioritize data analysis and artificial intelligence initiatives.

Job description

What We Do:

Data Scientists at the SEI use advanced statistics, data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to help our government and industry clients research and solve cybersecurity challenges. In this role, you will work with our customers to identify areas where advanced statistical techniques can help tackle problems, plan and develop prototype solutions, and build out final products. You'll get a chance to work with elite cybersecurity professionals and university faculty to build new technologies that will influence national cybersecurity strategy for decades to come. You will co-author research proposals, execute studies, and present findings to DoW sponsors and at academic conferences.
Our team works on a wide range of projects. Our current work includes research in generative AI and large language models, computer vision, multimodal AI, agentic AI, and assurance of AI systems. Additionally, we craft metrics and experimental designs for large-scale cybersecurity research programs, develop human-in-the-loop machine learning solutions, and build classifiers to identify security vulnerabilities. If you are a data science or statistics expert with an interest in cybersecurity, we want to hear from you!
Requirements:

  • BS in data science, machine learning, computer science, statistics, or related highly-quantitative discipline with eight (8) years of experience or equivalent combination of training or experience; or MS in data science, machine learning, computer science, statistics, or related highly-quantitative discipline with five (5) years of experience; or PhD in data science, machine learning, computer science, statistics, or related highly-quantitative discipline with two (2) years of experience.
