What is a computer associate?

Computer Associates are IT professionals who provide technical support, maintenance, and troubleshooting for computer systems and networks within an organization. Their responsibilities often include installing hardware and software, assisting users with technical issues, and ensuring the smooth functioning of IT infrastructure. They may also help with system upgrades, security protocols, and documentation of IT procedures. Computer Associates often work as part of an IT team and may specialize in certain systems or applications depending on the organization’s needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer associate, and why are they important?

To excel as a Computer Associate, you need a solid understanding of computer systems, troubleshooting, and technical support, often backed by a degree in information technology or a related field. Familiarity with operating systems (like Windows and Linux), help desk ticketing systems, and basic networking tools is essential. Job description

About the Role

We're seeking an experienced Electrical CAD Designer to support a major upgrade project at a large-scale scientific research facility. In this role, you'll develop detailed electrical designs, schematics, models, and supporting documentation that translate engineering concepts into manufacturable products supporting engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and installation activities for a cutting-edge accelerator upgrade.

This is a hands-on, on-site position working closely with electrical and mechanical engineers, project managers, and other technical staff.

What You'll Do

Electrical CAD Design

  • Create and maintain electrical models, wiring diagrams, schematics, and panel layouts using approved CAD software (AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Inventor, KiCad, or similar)
  • Review and revise designs based on engineering feedback, design reviews, and approved engineering changes

Manufacturing and Assembly Documentation

  • Generate bills of materials, wire and cable lists, and supporting documentation for manufacturing and assembly activities
  • Prepare documentation with sufficient detail to support manufacturing, assembly, or installation

Engineering Coordination and Design Integration

  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, project managers, and other project personnel to ensure designs meet technical requirements and integrate with applicable product assemblies
  • Participate in design coordination and design-review activities as requested

Design Standards and Document Control

  • Perform work in accordance with applicable industry standards, codes, and internal quality requirements
  • Maintain organized design files, libraries, and revision-controlled documentation within Windchill or similar systems

Deliverables May Include

  • Electrical CAD models
  • Electrical schematics
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Panel layouts
  • Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Wire and cable schedules
  • Manufacturing and assembly documentation
  • Engineering drawing revisions
  • Revision-controlled design documentation
  • Design packages supporting fabrication, assembly, testing, or installation

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience producing electrical CAD designs using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical, KiCad, or equivalent software
  • Demonstrated experience developing manufacturing-ready electrical documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, bills of materials, and wire/cable schedules
  • Experience developing and maintaining revision-controlled engineering documentation within a PLM or PDM system
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical components, schematic development, and wiring practices
  • Familiarity with applicable industry standards and codes relevant to electrical design activities

Preferred

  • Experience supporting national laboratories, research facilities, particle accelerators, or other complex scientific or industrial engineering projects
  • Experience using Autodesk Inventor for three-dimensional electrical or electromechanical design
  • Experience integrating electrical and mechanical CAD models
  • Experience using Windchill for engineering document and configuration management
  • Experience supporting fabrication, assembly, installation, or commissioning of complex engineered systems

Additional Details

  • This role is expected to be performed primarily on-site due to the need for direct interaction with engineering personnel, facility access, and use of specialized engineering systems
  • Travel is not anticipated as a routine part of this role
  • Candidates must be able to comply with all applicable site access, safety, security, and cybersecurity requirements
